Disco 3 ,bumpy ride ( solved )

I have found over the years they can be very very sensitive to tyre pressures
I am currently running 35 front and 40 rears but I'm also running 255 6519 tires and I have to say with these tall side walls it is the nicest riding it has been in the eight years I have owned it
Next time somebody says to you discovery 3s have a magic carpet ride you have my full permission to nut them full on in the face!

may I ask what makes of tyres ur running plse mate , indeed haven’t seen anyone running a 65mm sidewall before , only reason I ask is there 32.1 , assume that’s on the limit without any mods having to be done

thks as always and u didn’t mind me asking

The 2nd number in tyre sizes is an aspect ratio defined in a percentage term, so 65 is actually 65 percent of the 255 bit, and is not 65mm, I might have a measure just to see how tall the sidewwalls are.
Yes the tyres are 32 inches tall,/diameter, they miss everything by an inch or so.
They are ex new shape defender Contis, done minimal miles, and spare was brand new.

I bought them purely as they came mounted to d3 hse alloys, mine were rough as arseholes plus needed tyres so that would be well over 1k for a refurb and 4 tyres.
So I got the new rough wheels refurbed and had the defender tyres fitted and bobs your uncle, look smart and a sensible price

many thks , so would that then mean the 65 is 6 1/2 inches plse , expect Ive got that wrong, lol

great call as indeed as u say otherwise being expensive , if u ever get chance would u mind taking a picture plse

as a side note think I saw someone trying to fit 23 inch rims , assume off a FFRR , but main vehicle I’ve seen low, profiles on are RRS , such a shame when they do that

im still on 17’s but have a set of 19’s in my shed that will need new tyres ,

Sorry for delay updated measurements taken from centre of hub to wheel arch lip

PASSENGER REAR 480

what do you think was parked on a little slope if that matters ?

many thks for the results

fronts should be 465mm / rears 485mm so indeed could do with re calibration, however try and find a nice flat place, ie a supermarket car park as only takes 5 x mins to quickly re measure them to see if they’ve changed by much

Pressure for ur tyres if they are 255/60/18 would set them around 30 fronts / rear 35 psi

if that all checked out the next things that would need to be looked at are the psi pressure that the suspension is running at , as of course of the pressures are aren’t as they should be the disco will be lower with less air in the struts , reducing the amount of travel

maybe the dampers / bushings etc are worn etc, but of course we just have to take it one step at a time to ensure things are correct as we progress through the suspension system,

so we need to then get that on level ground, re checked to see what they are , if required, re calibrated , tyres on the correct t pressures and then go from there

most importantly not throwing parts at it unless something Is 100% proven to be at fault

hope that’s helpful

Thank you so much appreciate this , will double check measurements and psi , yeah your right about throwing parts about cost me fortunes in the past by guessing

ur so welcome and indeed plse let us know how u get on

alas use to get a massive amount of knowledge when I use to be a heating engineer, many companies would keep throwing parts at the problems without resolving the issues , so think that’s where I’ve also learnt not to do the same with vehicles

worse when a garage says the same, in let try this or that , oh and this, lol, all along the poor customer having to foot the bill , can understand in some circumstances but not at the customer’s expense, another reason I never go anywhere near dealers

At least here with many very knowledgeable members we should be able to pin it down

Sorry if I’ve asked before but have u looked for any dates on ur suspension struts plse , might be originals , mine were and had done 90;000 miles , when I replaced the fronts the difference was like night and day , hopefully we don’t have to go down that route

What scanner did u say u were using plse , sorry can’t remember

also great with spring on its way , more than happy to help as much as I can and know many other members are also very kind in being able to assist with there vast knowledge

No scanner as of yet , spent so much lately but will deffo purchase sooner rather then later , the white autel was reccomended as a cheap alternative but not sure how much it can do , will I be able to see a date on the struts looking from the arch ?

indeed those scanners are good value for money , just found the link for u

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255951554993

hopefully u will be able to see the date , alas like always they may have come off over the years

but at least if we get the heights done and tyre pressure sorted we can then go from there

finally getting the codes read to ensure there isn’t anything lurking so to speak

ur in Medway arnt u pls , once again sorry asking , alas my memory is terrible, lol

taken some screen shots for u

Il get this ordered cheers and yea ashford Kent , family in Medway etc

ur so very welcome and indeed always nice being able to pass what I’ve learnt

many thks , so indeed not too far away from some of us here

plus for the money don’t think u can go to wrong , also have one that I keep in my glovebox, so very handy particular when ur out and about

Ordered should get for Friday so il have a good go and see if I can work it etc , hopefully start to get somewhere .

that’s brilliant

if u don’t mind me adding , ensure ur battery is fully charged , plug the scanner in , get a full list of the fault codes , then either print them, or email them to ur self so u have a full record of them, clear everything , go for a short drive, then rescan to see what comes back

then with the new scan print or email the same to urself , u can then copy and paste the old and new codes here if u wish as we will then be able to see if anything stands out and go from there

Hi checked front struts today , sticker still on there dated 2007 so still original and car has done 170 k so I’m guessing could do with being changed , that said I’ve adjusted tyres to psi you advised and the ride is noticeably improved so hopefully I can try and use the scanner tommorow/weekend and adjust suspension I do feel I’m getting somewhere with the input on here .

Many thks and indeed wondered that with regards to there age , also so pleased its improved the ride quality by just reducing the pressures

Indeed plse let us know how u get on with the scanner, at least then u have it for future reference , along with saving a fortune in not having to go to a garage every time a light comes up

plus so nice being able to pass it on so to speak from what I’ve learnt over the years of what helps , great pleasure mate and indeed feel free to ask if u get stuck on anything and what it’s like after being calibrated

Cheers will update hopefully weekend although I’m now hit with another issue you may have some knowledge on I’m going to put a new post up

Finally got round to adjusting suspension with the autel , took few attempts but got the successfull notification in the end , seems to be sitting better and improved the ride , maybe not as good as should be but better then before , thanks to all that contributed to this thread helped me a lot ..
