Hi folks,

I recently replaced the coil packs to cure a misfire, which worked well, though god only knows why they hid them behind the inlet manifold (3 hour job!)

Anyway, unusually for me I decided to go by the book and I disconnected the battery prior to starting work. When I re-connected it and started it, he good news was tht the misfire was cured; bad news that the S and M 'cog' lights on the dash were flashing. I can't believe it could be the xyz switch and believe it may be more to do with the battery. I tested across the terminals and get 12.2v engine off and 14.2 running. Gearbox is shifting fine and gets all gears.

Any suggestions?
 
I would try disconnecting the battery again, leaving it for a bit, then re-connect it back up and see what happens :)
 
Have just gone out and disconnected battery - will give it half an hour and see what happens....

Not familar with the v8 layout... Have you prehaps unknowingly disturbed any of the gearbox /xyz switch connections? Do you have access to diagnostics?
Do you have another battery you can try, 12.2v doesn't sound overly high to me.

12.2v is far too low, it should be nearer to 12.6 or .7. The first thing to do would be to charge the battery overnight then re-install and see what happens.

There is every chance that this problem is caused by a weak battery.

Your best bet is to get it tested at a garage that will tell you if you have an issue once and for all.
 
Have now put a much beefier battery on top-up charge and will try it later tonight.

As for getting it tested at a garage, I'm not averse to the idea, but like most Landy owner, I like to do have a go myself first. If it absolutely defeats me, I'll book it in. Managed to identify the mosfire with my newly purchased fault reader and 'scope and fixed that - was very satisfying.... Am told the skin now missing from my right forearm will eventually grow back.....

Lay off those cans of 'special brew' till you've got that battery in and no more auto box warning lights :lol: ;)
 
Tried replacement battery and no different. Was showing 12.6v - is this normal? Am beginning to think I have upset something when I was pulling the thick loom about that goes across the top of the bulkhead....I wonder if this carries the gearbox sensor signals?
 
Im unsure of the layout of the v8. Have a look underneath and check the connection is ok with the xyz switch which on the td5 is on the n/s on the side near the top of the box. Just out of interest, have you been driving through water recently??

No, haven't been anywhere near water - it was fine until I disconnected the battery, replaced the coil packs and reconnected the battery. After trying the other suggestions, I wouldn't be surprised if I've disturbed a connector to the xyz switch thing whilst I fitted new coils at back of engine.

Will have a look ASAP

Also thinking, if the box has thrown a fault due to low voltage, fault may be stored.
you may have to get it cleared. Someone else may be able to enlighten you on that
 
Ooop north... Well, north east really... Between Durham and Newcastle.

That post has me thinking - been wondering about getting some kinda diagnostic tool. Looking on the website, they're offering 20% discount if ten people buy a Nanocom - a mate and I would have one each.... I wonder if anyone else would be interested?

Have you tried the reset procedure?

I had to do this on the inlaws D2 but I'm buggered if I remember what it was... It was something like turn the ignition on, shift into neutral, transfer box into low then back into high, start it then box into D?
