Disco 2 TD5 Jammed Tailgate lock

I put a replacement door lock in the tailgate today, shut the door and now it wont open...

The button comes up on key press but the mechanisim seems like it's jammed. I got the door card off from the inside and can get to the levers of the lock but I still cant get the door open, no matter how much wiggling the levers and shoving the door.

Short of taking a plasma cutter and cutting the bloody door out... anyone got any bright ideas on how to get the door open with a lock that the mechanisim is jammed. You can only remove the lock with the door open and you can only get to the hinges with the door open??

I suppose that was done on purpose
don't know if the D2 uses a different mechanism, on my D1 I always had to pry the rear door upwards with some large screwdriver before I could open it, until some kind soul adjusted the fixed part of the lock (but that also needs the door to be open)

My rear door lock stuck several times last winter and did as you did ,took off card as I couldn't open from the key or the inside lever but the reason was the lever on the outside needed loosening up with some silicon oil and a straw ,then operating it many times I freed it up and it opened..I think rainwater from the gutter (which was broken slightly) caused water to seep in to that area..worth a try...so in my case,not the lock but the lever itself .shoot some lubricant up under the black cover at the right hand side

Discomite, I get exactly what you are saying, because that happened to me before, but I disconnected the rod from the outside handle simply to knock it out of the equation, the lever that it acts upon is the one that I'm wiggling from the inside...But no Joy!

Hi I had the same problem last year, you can remove the green oval badge on the outside of the handle/locking mechanism and have a fiddle about, with mine it was the release rod that had fallen off due to having to slam the door due to dropped hinges, don't know if you've tried this but hope it helps

It was the CHILD LOCK that got itself stuck in an intermediate position!

Solution:

• I think I was having the same problems as the original poster, and angling a screwdriver (from the inside of the car) past the door weather seal bulb to push the child lock back all the way up into the unlocked position resulted in a loud CLICK and then the door worked perfectly for a few cycles before getting stuck again (requiring the same fix). Even though the child lock switch looks 'up', it isn't all the way up and only forcing it up with a screwdriver push results in it unlocking. When the child lock is stuck in an intermediate position, neither the inside nor outside handles work. I'll be replacing my door lock actuator, as it seems to keep getting itself into this intermediate position.

Problem:

• My Land Rover Discovery 2 tailgate / trunk / rear door is stuck shut. All handles feel like they function properly and the door lock actuator sounds normal in each key fob unlock, lock, and superlock. The little door lock tab indicator on the inside of the trunk door pops both up and down as it should when actuated via key fob, and it pops up when the door is locked then the inner door handle is pulled. So all this looks and sounds normal. But the door is totally stuck shut! I've removed the interior trunk door trim to view the actuator and it looks fine and operates fine. But door won't open. Help!
• This is *not* the classic Disco II rusty outdoor handle fixed by WD40 issue. The outer and inner door handles pull and spring return just fine.

  the goal is to push this switch up to the unlock position. i know it already looks like it's up, and it won't shift much... but it'll shift a bit, and give you a big loud satisfying click when it goes.

After removing the actuator i could see that the problem was a small plastic knob where the child lock pivots. It should be stuck in the metal casing but it broke and the child lock was behaving badly.

Instead of buying a new lock i drilled the plastic axis, put a thread in the metal casing and replaced it with a 5mm bolt with the head filed down for clearance.

Its been a few days and it's working great.
