help, cant open tailgate of 02 discovery

Hi,

google brought me here, lots of people with tailgate problems, but cant find a solution.



The tailgate is stuck, I've removed the door card and everything seems to be moving freely, nothin seems seized, the central locking moves the lock button up and down, the inner handle will pop the lock back up.

the outer handle isnt seized

The inner handle wont open the door, but the child lock is on.

the outer handle lever moves up and down freely, it feels like it's not connected to anything or something.

where do I go from here, google is just telling me to use some wd40, but that's not it, the handle isnt seized.

How do I open the door? it needs to be open to remove the latch!



Going to dublin in the morning for a wedding, want to take the disco as the kids get far less carsick in it.

sh*t, I've made it worse.

was wiggling my fingers about inside and disconnected the deadlock linkage, now the frickin thing is completely locked, cant even unlock, never mind open it.

I can feel the deadlock linkage, but cant get onto it to open it.

I've seen all those, none of them have a fix.

this isnt a wd40 job, the latch/lock mechanism seems broken internally,all the levers move freely, but the door opening one doesnt seem to be connected to anything.


but how do I get the open the door to replace it?

u better try that wd40 trick under the badge and make sudden movements with the exterior handle cos the problem is that it doesnt go back enough due to rust and muck as to grab the latch

that's not the problem here, the handle on the outside is perfect, the linkage inside is completely free and clean, but the arm that the outside handle connects to is doing nothing.


ok, I've calmed slightly, got the deadlock opened again,

so back to square one, outer handle does nowt, inner handle will unlock the door but not open it as the child lock is on.

CHILD LOCK!!!!!!

I put a scredriver between the door and the door rubber and switched off the child lock, then was able to open the door from the inside.

I'm gonna take the latch out and clean it up well.

Don't be a stranger

took the lock out, cleaned it, refitted and the same thing happened after a few open/closes.

eventually figured it out. if you attempted to open the door from the outside while locked the lock was sticking partially open.

a tip on the child lock lever would release it.

after studying it for ages I found that if I moved the end of one of the torsion springs to rest outside the latch it was under just a little bit more torsion and was able to overcome whatever the sticking issue is.

I'm not sure whether the cause is something getting sticky, or the spring getting weak with age.

I dont think I've seen the last of this issue.

what's involved in reprogramming the central locking to open all the doors? I dont live in compton and I'm not overly concerned about carjackings. it wrecks my head this whole double blip routine

u need to plug in a dedicated tester/nanocom/hawkeye, go to BCU programming and disable SPE(single point entry)..that's all

As Fery says, with the correct bit of kit it takes about 30 secs.


Good overall thread though, will surely help someone else in the future.

I had the same problem today, wouldn't open in or out so took the badge off and sprayed, then went inside with a screwdriver lifted the child lock it then opened from inside and out will grease when I get to the yard. Thanks very much for sharing.

Replace the lock, it is on last legs.

It was the CHILD LOCK that got itself stuck in an intermediate position!

Solution:

• I think I was having the same problems as the original poster, and angling a screwdriver (from the inside of the car) past the door weather seal bulb to push the child lock back all the way up into the unlocked position resulted in a loud CLICK and then the door worked perfectly for a few cycles before getting stuck again (requiring the same fix). Even though the child lock switch looks 'up', it isn't all the way up and only forcing it up with a screwdriver push results in it unlocking. When the child lock is stuck in an intermediate position, neither the inside nor outside handles work. I'll be replacing my door lock actuator, as it seems to keep getting itself into this intermediate position.

Problem:

• My Land Rover Discovery 2 tailgate / trunk / rear door is stuck shut. All handles feel like they function properly and the door lock actuator sounds normal in each key fob unlock, lock, and superlock. The little door lock tab indicator on the inside of the trunk door pops both up and down as it should when actuated via key fob, and it pops up when the door is locked then the inner door handle is pulled. So all this looks and sounds normal. But the door is totally stuck shut! I've removed the interior trunk door trim to view the actuator and it looks fine and operates fine. But door won't open. Help!
• This is *not* the classic Disco II rusty outdoor handle fixed by WD40 issue. The outer and inner door handles pull and spring return just fine.

  the goal is to push this switch up to the unlock position. i know it already looks like it's up, and it won't shift much... but it'll shift a bit, and give you a big loud satisfying click when it goes.
