I can get away without the side step but the other half has little legs and is starting to struggle,
I want to make a one off for the passenger side, has any of the experienced guys on here tried this with success??

I have gathered some bits and pieces of square section and a 2 foot length of tread.

Are there any no no's to look out for - legal wise

Or Would a defender spring loaded step welded to a bracket/box section frame work ??

comments appreciated

Can't make her walk, means I would have to kiss her bye bye.

Have seen some online but non local, therefore £100+ and then the cost of transport.
Yes shame about distance, coulda made use of your ones.

Also wanna play with welder, recently bought second hand mig, years since i did any welding.

will still try to find some local but in mean time will have a play

Thanks

The side steps on sale are pretty useless as steps , having fitted them for use by disabled family members I reckon they are a waste of time . You would be better of with the old series style folding step , they are still sold new and second hand . Or fabricate from scratch or using one of the towball mount single side steps as a basis . The disco rear folding step with the gas strut is a waste of time as the struts fail and they cost a fortune , not sure how you would fit one either .

OP , get the weight from an advert online , get a quote from parcels ot go or similar broker and get a courier to go pick up some of these steps you are being offered ....rather than pay out good money for them !

Like I said , I dont rate them . I am disabled now and both my parents and ex wife are too . We all have or had D1s and had steps but ended up not using them - they are too narrow to be of real use . We all ended up using a new approach to boarding the vehicle - going in backwards and sliding backside up onto seat then pivotting 90* to face front .

As I said , the best side step for access was the series/defender folding type but that did require some solid handholds too .

cheers for comments -
the more I hear of the side steps the less i like or want

think i will go down the folding step route - mount it on a box section frame and onto side step fixing points

O/H can't reverse onto seat either - short arse + 2" lift = seat is at tit level
also amusing watching her fall out, guaranteed wedgy every-time

will post some pick's of my attempts.
