Do all disco 1 diffs have the same spline setup?
I've just got a 1991 V8 that needs both swivel housings sorting and new shocks etc for MOT. I've already got a 1995 300tdi that's got a knackered engine but all running gear is perfect so looking at swapping all bits over.
Would it be easier just to drop off axle complete with radius arms etc than just change the swivel joints and half shafts on each side as I want to fit all new polybushes too.
Also, would the 300 auto box fit the V8 engine as it is a manual at the moment and may need a new clutch anyway.
Cheers

as far as I remember the 300 box won't fit , v8 box is v8 only somthing to do with the spline and input shaft length . don't see a problem swapping the whole axle over , just check that brakes are the same , as stopping is sort of important !

after ka 92/93 and all 300 tdi diffs became 24 spline before that all 10 spline unless axle etc been changed at some time autos can be made to fit but unless you change valve block as well will drive very poorly you really need to keep autos for diesels and petrols to there own kind

The box was just a thought.
I'll be using the brakes off the 300 axle too as I put brand new shaft/swivel hub assemblies with calipers in a couple of years ago that were for a TD5.

you gonna have problems mate

the v8 car has different diff/stubs/hubs so you could fit the whole axle, but you have to use the brakes off the v8 becuase 200 shape has twin circuit brake suystem (2 pipes) and 300 shape just has 1 pipe, so your late calipers wont fit early car.

not sure 100% tbh if early calipers will fit late hubs. i know for a fact that the caliper mounting bolts are different diameter. i had to fit a 300 tdi swivel to my 200 axle in an emergency once, fitted swivel to axle and my 200 stub/hub to swivel, but not sure if 200 caliper will fit onto 300 stub/hub setup due to offsets etc.

suck it and see, 300 spline axle is stronger axle, more upgrades available but just depends on caliper fitment.

and as a very small point of interest v8 axles were slightly different than tdi in diff angle not so much that you could notice, but marked by 8mm hole in panhard rod bracket

get away! james martin you know too much about land rover parts!

tell me more though, tell me more! how would there need to be a different diff angle if the transfer case was (assumedly) mounted in the same place...?

or was the v8 crank centerline at a different level to the diesel, perhap due to the width of the v8 or the depth of the tdi sump perhaps???

intriguing!!!

p.s. was there a hole in the tdi axle bracket at all?

depth of v8 sump, true i found out when i went to unipart with the bosses knob son ,we were to build all new axles not in current production ie 300 tdi and before when td5 came out ,some maybe just one others hundreds a year,to get the chance we had to produce full build list ,luckily bosses son did the v8 and missed the fact they where different at that time by part no and angle mind you so did i but he was the one that looked like a prat and had to have his whole list explained ,funnily enough we did eventually build the replacement v8 axles using tdi cases as wasnt enough to warrent getting them made

Cheers for that, didn't know about brake system difference,so had to go and look, and you're dead right on the twin pipe set up....damn.Gonna check mounts and hopefully they'll work.
I didn't realise either until I was looking car over, there's no anti roll bars,or mounts to fit them.Might try and modify/make brackets as am able in that sort of thing.:D
Otherwise I'll just have to change swivel ball seals.

Would the diff gearing be the same on V8 and 300 tdi? If not it'll be a wasted exercise probably. We need to compile a definitive list as to what can be fitted to what...if one doesn't already exist that is.

I've finally got round to swapping over the front end,and mostly has gone ok.The calipers have been an issue due to the bolt size difference, but managed to drill the caliper bolt holes out slightly. They were only about 0.5 mm out but now ok.
I've just got to reconnect the driveshaft and bleed the brakes tomorrow as it started to chuck it down after I finished bolting on the first caliper tonight.
When the front is finished,I'll swap the rear axle over and hopefully that will go easier.
Cheers for the input.
