Had to go out today, first time since Tuesday.

It churned on the starter for at least 5 seconds, normally fires up immediately.

No error codes and full tank.

Heater plugs,
Fuel pump,
Fuel filter housing,
None return valve,
Air bleed valve,
Injector seals,
Crank sensor,
Crank sensor wires,
Failing battery,
Mine got so awful to start that I was charging a spare battery ready, so far out off my list I've not changed the crank sensor or battery and currently it's running by 3 revolutions and I don't feel like won't start any more but it still bugs me that my previous td5 would start as soon as the starter hit the flywheel :D

It always struggles to start below half a tank since the pump was replaced, got a new filter head to go on some time.

But I filled a few days a go, so not that.

It was really cold, only real difference.

Does it need them?

I thought only indirect injection used them.
You thought wrong, remove the glow plug relay after a really cold night, ask somebody to start the engine, see how much it cranks then watch the exhaust and listen to the sound of engine the first 30 seconds... next day start it with working glow plugs and decide if there is or not a difference.... BTW those plugs are not there only for cold start, at below 0*C outside they work for about 3 minutes after the engine was started... i measured that:
