Well had a green laning day today and on the way home setting off from junctions a couple of times whilst turning the car felt as though something was jamming either transfer box or rear diff I'm leaning towards the rear diff but anyone else had the same sort of symptoms to confirm ? It's only done it a few times on the way home (around 40 miles) no feels the similar jamming jumpy bang as my defender did when front diff ****t itself

Sounds like the diff lock hasn't unlocked.
Find a grass verge or other loose surface and drive along it, forwards and backwards for 20 yards a few times.

I didn't have the diff lock linkage on had it apart both axles diffs and turns out the transfer box is goosed strange though as I was just going steady without the linkage on should have it all back together today with replacement tranny box all linkages and hopefully some new boots on her. Roll on next week's green laning.

+1 and hope you ain't done it no harm! Is the diff lock light on?
no diff lock light as I've used a box out of a 300tdi and gearbox top so all wirings different only thing I can think is it must of jumped into diff lock but tried crawling underneath and doing it manually with a spanner but no matter which way I did it after reversing etc it was the same.

The trouble is you have to keep pressure on the lever while driving it to make sure it comes out, whcih you obviously can't do, well not single handed.
When I bought my D2 TD5 auto, I was driving it home when the hi-lo lever jumped into neutral. Never done it before said PO and has never done it on me since, funny things gear boxes!:(

my present d2 did the same as soon as I was letting off throttle on motorways so the engine was slowing the car it would jump out into neutral that's why I went for diff lock box when I replaced it last year.

Interstingly, mine did it when I put it into a lower gear to test the engine braking.
Have since used it many times as we live up a mountain in France and it helps whenever we come down it! Never jumped out since!

Not on my own laid on my back outside on the drive lol couldn't get crossmember bolts undone so had to get it on my chest and lift onto crewmembers then wedge it and get inside and wiggle it about til I could get a bolt screwed in to hold it then back underneath to wiggle it home was a pig to do on my own with no pit or ramps. Needs must at times best hough. Made the mistake of putting centre tunnel back together before filling with oil ....... Lenght it hosepipe 2l pop bottle with fruit shoot lid on jubilee clipped hose into it and had to squirt the oil that way lol

I have to work like this and my drive is big gravel, think one end of Chesil beach. So feel your pain, REALLY, feel your pain.
I refill gearboxes etc with a big garden sprayer, the sort you pressurise. Takes a while but is more comfortable.
But, joking apart, still a bit easier than a gearbox wasn't it?!

It was only a bit easier lol if the crossmember would of done off id of thrown it in (or like to think I would of). Going to look at a disco after 7 td5 auto 3" lift stage 3 big hybrid turbo etc running 219bhp and more torque than I'd ever need sat on 35s it looks a monster might save me killing the mint 52 reg ive got it's too clean to off road to be honest

Yep I treated my cross member to lots of derusting stuff and worked the bolts to and fro until they eventually gave, a while back, in anticipation of exactly this.
As you say it is nice to have a minter to drive around in, do long trips in etc and a rough old dog to go greenlaning in. They are cheap enough at the mo. Only problem can be the neighbours if you have ones like some of ours who take every new Landy on our drive personally!
Hope it has no hidden probs. I'd be asking the guy why he is selling it.;):)

it's a pals motor he's got a couple but he's not getting out enough so I've asked him if hell sell it. From the ones I've been looking at they are doing silly money at the min compared to 12/18 month ago there was loads about for a grand needing off bits doing now they're 2k+ for a bog standard older 10p engined one

Well if it's a pal's motor and he values your friendship then you should be OK. You probly have known it a while then!
Don't know if their prices rising is a good thing or not. I have a feeling that when the economic crisis due to Covid19 and then Brexit may well drive prices down a bit. But I bought mine in 2014 at £1850 and it was in good nick with loads of service history so I cannot judge when it comes to one for rough stuff. Loads of the special kit is expensive to say nothing of the tyres, so best of luck with it. At least you'll have another to drive while you get the first one back on the road.:)
