diff or not?

Did you determine if the nose was coming from the front or the back as if it's a diff it could have varying different noises when going up or down hill under load etc as I had experienced . I had a noise which I thought was coming from around the transfer box ,and earlier thought it might have been from the front as I had done a lot of work on the brakes, disks and balljoints, but had a friend lie low in the back and out the door as we went through various motions. Pretty soon he diagnosed the back .We drained what was left of the rear diff., which turned out to be a small drop of watery oil. Replacement used but good diff cost me €100,a pair of seals €2.50 and gear oil . The way it's driving now makes me think it had been going for a while..

ive done the props off tests and drive flanges off test, its not either diff,as noise was still evident,i think its the clutch release bearing,so going down the fit a new one route, ill update once its done,in a couple of weeks, but thanks for your input mate...

know youve isolated the front axle by disconnecting prop and drive flanges, but have you done it on rear too?
might just be worth it before dragging the box out.

more fecking problems,i dropped the car off at 8.30am along with the clutch kit,i went to the garage at 4pm,nearly done mate, ill ring you when its ready,so at 6.45pm i rang him back,oh hes still on with it,he"ll ring when finished,he"just rang me saying it wont go into 1st properly, clutch pedal aint going all the way down cars creeping forward when you go for 1st gear, they didnt touch any of the hydraulics, but are letting it bleed by gravity (never heard that before)overnight and checking it again in morning,WTF...

Now defender is adjustable,
I can't remember if disco is or isn't- seem to remember threaded bar internal to master cylinder- could be imagining it though

They've not done the clutch install right. I'm dying to hear their next move - "you gearbox is ****ed mate, a new one installed will be £xxx"

Keep us updated, even if it's just to keep your sanity ;);)

ok lads,my clutch is done and working fine, unfortunately the noise is still there,so now im going to do what nrgserv suggested and try the drive members off the back now, with the prop off and diff locked,so standby for next installment,ha ha ha ....

might be worth dropping transfer box sump after collecting oil in clean container so you can put it back in if clean ,should be ep90 ,check for free play in all gears and damage to teeth or scratch marks, is in quiter in 4th gear compared to 3rd and 5th

no difference in any gear mate, sounds all the same,i looked at sump but didnt remove it,one of the bolts looked a bit tricky to get a socket on it,so what if the t box shows what you mention, will that mean a new box mate,if so how much would i be loooking at?

bloody hell, now ive got someone(worked on landys in the army)saying it sounds like the layshaft bearing, and not to worry about it,jeez, anybody want to but a disco? ha ha ha
