diff or not?

yes mate, sounds like its winding up on acceleration then winding down non deceleration,my mate says it sounds like a washing machine going in to a spin cycle, but a slightly lower tone if you know what i mean.

yeah it alters tone going up the gears mate, gets higher tone as revs go up.

james the oils were changed 2 weeks ago,but if you reckon i should check them ill do that as soon as i can mate...

what were they like ,it would have helped narrow down faulty unit, usually wear enough to bring a noise shows with metal sheen or bits in oil, does it go quieter in 4th gear as said t/box sump isnt hard to remove

just makin sure i got this right, tone goes up as speed increases in first gear, then drops as second gear selected and gains again as engine speed increases, drops when third selected and increases till fourth selected, same into fith?

apparently front axle oil was very metallic,so if i drop it again and check for contamination, therell certainly be wear in there somewhere yes!
its hard to say but when i think about it i think it does go off a bit till i hit 5th then comes back again...

most of the time i can get away in 1st no noise then into 2nd and 3rd it comes on,but like i said earlier since i had props off and replaced them,it seems to happen more through all gears but not so much 3rd to 4th

haha which was your last read post, cos i were witing one when you posted!

edit-
theres 2 possible issues at mo and i'm trying to work between them.
-transmission issue (which i think jm is heading for)
-overtensioned timing belt (which i was heading for, but not sure now)

you can here it on over run,and under load, dip clutch and it disappears,no noise when revs return to tickover.
its not the belt.
as theres metallic **** been found in front diff, suggest start there then.
someone else suggested earlier removing front drive flanges and front prop.
see if it disapears.

drive flanges?does that mean wheels off, flanges off, wheels back on,drive it?sorry mate im a bit thick when it comes to this,ha ha ha,but again your help and input are invaluable.

i did remove front prop but not flange earlier

depends on which rims you have.
steel rims can do it with wheels on, alloys will have to come off.

centre of wheel is a domed cap. remove this, and the 5 bolts round circular steel bit.
remove split pin from end of shaft in middle, (might be a pin with a clip round small shaft).
remove nut.
remove circular steel bit (drive flange).
repeat for other side.
remove prop.
drive long enough to confirm if noise is presant or not.
reassemble using new gaskets, and cleaning gasket faces up first.

if noise has gone, these will have to be stripped further to get diff out.
if your not confident, your gonna need help, or a garage.

note- removing drive flanges will expose wheel bearings to road ****, dont leave it like that. you may also gat some oil come out too.

got ya mate, thats no problem,im up to that,i could even change diff if thats what turns out to be problem...

going to and coming back from work today,i really took more notice of whats happening, and have found that the noise can appear in any gear while taking up drive...

in that case it may not be diff as you had it when you took the props off.
could be thrust bearing on clutch.

try a recording of it, but so many variables now gonna be difficult to pinpoint on a forum.

depends on your definition of difficult and expensive.
its a gearbox out job.
it takes me about 5 hours to do a clutch (effectively what your doing),
and thats with workshop and ramps.
mates rates at 160 quid. (cheap clutch included, more if you want a known make)
commercially, 250 - 300 quid, tho there was a post on summat else where garages
darn sarf were charging 450 and 650 quid to do a clutch.
