well im going to try the drive members off first at the weekend, see what comes of that then itll be clutch job, thing is the clutch hasnt got any slip or drag,if that makes a difference,it used to shudder a little when pulling away, but since changing donut last weekend it doesnt happen any more, its smooth as silk...

disco 300tdi,had timing belt done 2 weeks ago,now noticed a whine which gets louder as i accelerate, could it be the diff,i need to get to lancashire on sunday (from newcastle)dont have another car, would it be safe to drive until monday...thanks in advance...

Had a similiar problem with a whine getting louder as I accelerate and at speed. Turned out to be the wife.....:D

will do mate...
so if it is the thrust bearing theres no fear itll go in the immediate future, just been quoted £400 to fit a clutch,complete...
they can be noisey for thoudands of miles, depends on what you can put up with.
worst case is it packs up and you cant dip the clutch but would expect some grumbling and lumpiness coming back up the peddle.
assuming it is the bearing of course!

right, ive done the test with drive members off and seemed no different,on taking the members off,the near side one was bone dry,no grease at all, whereas the off side one was well packed,so ive greased it up,and driving back home(did job at work,10 miles away) i was struggling to hear the whine, could it have been the dry drive member?i bloody hope so...

you did have the front prop off as well didnt you?

the noise is now more evident, and when i acclerate up to around 65-70mph to overtake,im getting a squealing noise, sounds like when you run your finger nails down a blackboard, then as i back off the pedal it goes away!!release bearing?am i on the right track?

DAZ

press clutch pedal whilst driving but not enough to release clutch should effect noise if release brg, sump can be removed easily to check transfer box bearings etc

it can be quite difficult diagnosing some faults even with experience ,i know quite a few garages that diagnose by part changing , i sold one a gearbox ,transfer box and diff plus they told me they had fitted new props

hmm i see, well im going the new clutch route, see what happens, after doing all the tests to rule out diffs,im being drawn to the clutch,if my memory serves me right,i had an astra mk1 in my youth and it was the same noise as this, and that turned out to be the release bearing,if it aint the clutch, never mind could do with it replaced anyway, its the original one i think, then ill search elsewhere for the problem, atleast ill have a shiny new clutch,lol...
