hi,
i want to change the transmission fluid in my auto box and change the diff oils too.

only problem is i havent got a clue how to!!

have the right oil/fluid, just need the knowledge.

thanks

buy a ****shop manwell then after you decide its too complircated, drain yer diff from the big bung on the bottom of them.
fill them back up through the bung about half ways up them do it with the vehicle level as that way when the oil starts to dribble out, yer done.

yer g/box yer need to take the bottom orf it, usually, so don't fergit to use a BIG drip tray to catch all the oil.

before you undo the g/box sump see if you can undo the filler tube where it enters the g/box. that way you only have a little stream of oil to catch.

of course you wint get it all out that way so get ready fer when you undo the sump.

inside they'll be a filter you need to change, so do that, clean up the sump and don't leave any bits of fluff or other crap inside. stick sump and filler back on and fill up through dipstick hole.. job did

if yer disco is any different am sure someone will tell yer

I noticed on my mates Vauxhall Omega, that their auto box has amagent in the bottom of the sump to attract all th iron filing that accumilate.

can this be done when putting the sump back onto the disco gearbox?

my old 90 has a magnetic bolt as the drain plug and also a sieve like filter thingy. works a treat.

diffs are easy. box is easy but access may prove difficult if you got thick arms ;)

..And if you manage to do it okay you could be really generous and come and do mine for me ;)

...I'm still bottling out of doing this :(

Dunno about the auto box, but filling a manual defender box with those litre bottles is a right pain in the pills... you can only get the bottle high enough to get about half the oil out of 'em and it takes fookin' ages! 500cc oil syringe takes about 5 minutes max and costs about a tenner

ere int yer auto dip stick in the injun bay?
so yer int gort no probs getting yer bottle upside doon.
unlike yer manwell box which yer have to fill from under neath

There's fook all easy on the TD5 Slob, even worse when the trainee arseh*le at work turns the engine off 'cause he can't hear me and all the fookin oil drop's back into the bottom and over me.....

thanks all, will try the diffs, may leave the box to someone who knows what they are doing.
cheers

If its a TD5 (well any Disco II - not sure about the Disco I) the axle filler/level plugs are plastic with a stupid rubber O ring seal, the plug can sometimes snap when removed and often the O ring seal splits so go easy on them.

If they do break, they are cheap enough from the dealer but why plastic:confused:

Also if doing your gearbox and transfer box, always loosen the filler plug first to make sure you can get it out, saves draining out the oil then being stuck if you cannot get the filler plug out.
