Hey,

This may have been asked before, but I couldn't find anything searching...

Why are there so many modded Landys (Discos in particular, but also Defenders) which have obviously had a lot of money spent on them, but which haven't had aftermarket diff locks installed? :confused:

If I wanted to spend any money improving the off-road capability of a Land Rover, proper diff locks would be my first priority, I think... It seems like a standard Landy plus axle lockers would be pretty well unstopable (by mud).

Or am I just making this up in my head :p I guess I'm only really going off what I read in peoples' signatures and threads haha.
 
it's true, but when I read what people have done to their Landy's it rarely comes up haha. I think the only one I've seen is Mr. Noisy, but then again he put his compressor in a pretty obvious place haha
 
If only using yer landy for greenlaning you won't need locking diffs. If you do need them, you shouldn't be on that lane.

Diff locks may help you when on level ground or when climbing but can hinder you when descending.

I dont know if id totally agree there ratty.

Lockers can stop you from losing traction and therefore stop you from ripping up a surface.

Im not saying yam is wrong because lockers could cause damage but i think if there used sensibly then they can aid.
 
If your concern is ripping up a greenlane, then surely it's better to have locking diffs which prevent wheelspin (unless all the wheels are spinning) than having massive grippy tyres which can spin freely as soon as they lose traction and will tear up the ground?

I mean I guess if you just use your landy offroad every now and then it's understandable... But to pour money into things like camel cuts, spotlights, underbody protection etc. Which don't make much difference seems strange when a simple locker system (expensive though they are haha) could magic a normal landy into an offroad beast...

I've never seen any trouble coming from lockers when descending? Especially the ARB ones which you can control in the cab
 
you seem to be over looking the facts that a Camel cut is free, steering guards cost as little as £50. and Diffs cost a fook of a lot of money.

I've never had lockers fitted and can't think of anytime where they would have helped me get unstuck. Thinking of 2 occasions when I've had to be towed. The first time several other peeps with front and rear lockers also failed to get over the obstacle, and the 2nd time it was lack of ground clearAnce that stopped me.

Diffs are no use at all if your grounded out in ruts.
 
LOLcker should be the single first mod IMO.

Yes they are expensive but they work so well I know of 2 absolutly std 90's on 750 offroad tyres which run rings over heavily modded 90's that have had circa £500+ on suspension that clearly does not work A it too stiff, B the 90's drive like ****e on the road.

If your seriously into offroading lockers & taller tyres. Iif you like posing: stuuuuupid suspension lift and wide ass tyres.

When you have the lockers fitted then you can mess about with suspension and modifying bodywork to fit larger tyres Suspension be wary as its a minefield Too much of Bulls**t out there.

One of the key points a defender RRC have which made them great offroad was the SOFT suspension. you need to know what rate the springs are before you spend your cash otherwise your almost certainly making your motor worse!

People without lockers believe that having a rear axle that droops 3 foot will get them through it wont the weight on that wheel will spin up leaving you stuck a locker will solve this every time.

Can go on for ever but I can't be arsed tbh let the minions spend their thousands on a rugged looking motor thats will fail at the nearest pot hole!!
 
P.s lockers are banned or must be disabled for comps that I do. Therefore the ability to disable them costs alot of money. I still cringe at the trailered "comp Trucks" that take part in winch challenge events they could litrally weld up the diff centres and save £1500 worth of diff centres and air tank the extra weight of the crap that goes with it and have a fooking strong center without the option to unlock it. well I'll live with that for £1500 in my pocket thanks!!

Plenty of challenge trucks have really poor suspension really not thought out some on the other hand have great superb the difference between the two is huge

Well my experience has been quite different. I'll grant you that lockers don't help if you ground out, but they help if one of your tyres is off the ground, and one of the tyres on the other axle is spinning, or some such circumtance

A 2" lift will cost, what, £300 on the cheap, £800 with shiny nice parts and all the bells and whistles? And all you get is 2" more clearance from the bodywork and vital organs, and your lowest point remains your diff. The tyres help, obviously, but if you were to put that £300 into a single detroit locker I'd say it'd have a better effect off-road than a 2" lift, depending, of course, on what you're doing.



I guess I'm just biased from what I've seen in Australia. My mate had a 4Runner with big tyres, standard suspension and 2 detroit lockers, and he could go pretty well anywhere. Never saw him get stuck. My boss had a Landcruiser (the troopy style, not the poofy thing you can buy over here) with a big lift, big tyres and it really looked the business... But it was always the pokey-looking 4runner towing the mean-looking troopy out of the bull dust ;)
 
My 2" lift cost me less than £200. And consisted of

50mm Ally spacers £30 for the set of 4

full set of HD springs £80 IIRC

+2" Promcomp front shocks £75 for a pair.

But it's possible to buy a +2" lift kit for £200.
 
Great Redhand looks well cheap but a man with a £300 quid difflocker in the rear of his std height motor tyres for tyres will probably drive right past your motor offroad.

Greenlaning no need as said.

You didn't get +2" shocks for the rear? :confused:

Fair enough, but I still think the locker gives you more offroad ability that the flashy bits people stick on their cars (including lifts)

What a load of complete and utter drivel.. We're talking about your average landy owner here not comnp vehicles which probably make up less than 1% of landy owners.

But from what you've just stated. we might as well all not bother going green laning as we'll just end up getting stuck everytime??
