i have a 1988 defender 90, and the diff lock wont engage, i have checked the linkage arm and thats all fine, so i cant think of wat it can be, the short lever goes into low range fine and goes back into high range fine, but it just wiggles side to side with no resistance. any coments will be greatly accepted, rele need to get it sorted as im off roadin it on sunday. cheers. dave

iv checked the arm that comes out off of the short lever and thats fine, iv checked the arm that goes down to the diff and thats fine, so no idea.

side to side no resistance,**** me nearly as bad as me, read the post

u can tell its not workin wen ur driving it, ie around in a tight circle, no scrubing feeling, and (fanatic that dont even make sence)

my light stopped working last week, not sure if its do do with the cold or a electrical fault.

But to cheek for sure if its in try jacking up one wheel and driving off the jack. when diff lock is in it will, pull away.

And my leaver is very easy to slide across, as its should be.

thanxs discoandy ill give that a go, i doubt its got nethin to do with the light as none of the lights work neways. ne more ways of checking or fixing or things to check would be great, thanx, is the short lever surposed to move freely side to side?

my light doesn't work, and there's little resistance when pushing the lever over, (but it's not exactly floppy), however, the diff-lock definitely works. You can hear the grind on the back wheels when on gravelly surfaces for instance.

no grinding noise, but ill check again wen i go out on sunday, its only used as an off roader so it spends most of its time parked up at a mates farm.

you should get it on a gravelly surface, and then drive it full lock with your head out of the window, and listen for the back wheels slipping slightly every revolution or two.

you get a workshop manual :)

in all honesty, i don't know, but RTFM and then ask questions :D You can find them easily enough in PDF format, all over the net. For instance, put this in to google:

ext:pdf 90 110 workshop manual

nb. that's not a stupid smiley above... it should read "ext<colon>pdf"... but it's put in a winky face..

the second link is the book for the gearbox/propshaft/axles, which is probably what you're after.

alrite smart arse (RTFM)!!! i thought thats wat this place was for, so u cud cum and get answers from knowledgeable people with alot less hassle.
