i got stuck yesterday in my defender 90 with diff lock on and in low, got out to see what was happening with engine running and in 1st gear

nearside front and rear wheels spinning, offside rear spinning but offside front wheel wasn't!!!

Is this normal?

When i eventually become un'stuck i put it in "hi normal" and the said wheel seemed to be driving, ie, spinning.

How do i do that?

Thanks

Think this is the third time this week

The best way to check if it is indeed in Diff Lock would be to park up on a flat surface, chock the wheels, take yr handbrake off and take the car out of gear, lift one wheel off the ground.
If ya can spin tha wheel round yr not in Diff lock, Simples :D

depends which diff yer locking

standard coil sprung landrover only locks the centre transfer box diff so that front and rear propshafts both turn to take drive to both axles..... the axel diffs arnt locked so one wheel spinning means tother one on the same axle stops.... thats just how diffs work.....
without the centre diff locked one wheel spinning means the other three stop.
both wheels spinning on the same axle with an unlocked axle diff just means neither have any grip......

What he said ^^^^ ;)

Find a very steep decline, do not engage diff lock. Drive like a mofo and slam the brakes on way past the braking point, preferably on ice near a level crossing with the barrier down.

When you die you will so in the knowledge that diff lock was not engaged.
