Hi, just bought a defender 90 300 TDI.
It has a diff lock by pass using a wire!
Is it a serious problem or easy to resolve?
Thanks for help

Welcome

Noticed no one had replied

Might be worth posting in the Defender section rather than the engine one

What do you mean by a wire? An electrical cable (can't see how that would work) or a bit of coat hanger instead of the usual knob and rods?

what is a diff lock bypass?

diff lock is operated manually using the lever and the only electrical connection is the switch for the dash light iirc.

My thoughts exactly - am thinking something isn't working correctly, so the seller gave him the 'bypass story' as to why the dash light doesn't work

Only guessing of course. Need the OP to tell more

Thanks for all replies,
Sorry I was away hence could not reply!
The diff lock is released using a metal cable (wire/hanger like) which comes from the foot well.
I can engage in diff lock using diff lock lever (light comes on dashboard)but cannot
release it unless I pull the metal wire ( cable) , it's a very thin twisted two core cable!

if you unscrew the gearbox cover you should be able to see why the wire is there.

possibly just a quick fix by a previous owner as diff lock levers tend to seize through lack of use but once the top is off you will be able to see what is wrong. If not post a couple of pics up and someone may be able to help.

your lever is not adjusted correctly ,there is an eye blot that pivot lever is secured to needs adjusting to make sure it goes in /out equally
