near big mountains and lots of mud
since getting my 300 tdi back with its replacement lump,i have noticed the diesel knock is a lot more pronounced, unless its my imagination as the gaylander i borrowed is a lot quieter, timings spot on but pumps still turned up i think, put the diaphragm back to where it should be but tick over is still high, could this cause it? also still a bit of black smoke on load

You can either turn pump down by screw at back of pump 1/4 turn or retard your timing by taking cover of of timing housing slacken x3 10mm bolts and turn pump sprocket back a little with a 22mm socket (I think) mark it all first as there is only a small amount of adjustment. Only takes 5 mins but 1mm movement makes a diffrence

where is the screw at the back of the pump?

If tickover is high and its black smoking thats a pretty good sign someone has wound in the max fuel screw way to much.
6mm head and a 13mm locknut, spanner sizes
