Hi, My Tdi 300 engine have more than 1,000,000 km. I want to replace the pistons and conrods (it is still standart size). There is a number on the con rods - on which side it should be - the oil filter side or the other side ? Thank you, Jonatan

One million km on standard bores is impressive! A true tribute to Tdis!

Was it smoking, hence the piston replacement?
I had 620,000km (385k miles) on my 200tdi before the fire and it was showing no adverse signs of wear in its running. As long as they are maintained a tdi truly will go on forever. And when they do need some work as the OP is doing they are easy enough to rebuild.

Yes, it was smoking, especially the first 15-30 minutes. after opening the engine it seems only one piston had a problem but I replaced all the four.

35,714 km a year (22,300 miles)... 85 miles every working day.

What has the car been doing ?
True calculation. I am the only driver all those years. Some years +50,000 km and some less. A lot of trips and working all over my small country (Israel), even one big trip to the Jordanian deserts (Petra, Wadi Ram). 35,714 km/year it's only 100 km per day - its not much. The engine temperature was normal all those years - due to daily care. my son wants to keep drive the defender for the next 30 years...
