Hoy you, lazy barsteward, Tdi 300 autos Discos, bloôdy great they are.

My last one took me to Morocco and back, drove really well excellent gearbox and averaged 33mpg over 16,000mls.

As standard they are a bit slow, but they can be modified for very little cost and transforms the drive quality. They will NEVER be a fast car.

Here's what I did to a '98 TDi 300 auto:

1. Removed the viscous fan - TDi's are perfectly happy to run without a fan unless the cooling system is faulty.

2. De-EGR, costs £5 -£20 improves bottom end and mpg

3. De-Catt downpipe - if you buy one with a catt get rid of it for £21.25+vat using a Defender downpipe. Pick-up is much better as is mpg.

The later autos have EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) and have 120bhp as oposed to the manual box cars wwho have only 111bhp.

.

So did you put a kenlowe fan in or owt or just didn't bother?

I've had my new one about 6 months, 98 auto. I do love it but it's the usuall love hate relationship!!!

I worked out mpg not long after i had it, and i had been heavy footed and got 25mpg. we went camping and did 600 mile, towing an 8x4 trailer for 400mile that weighed prob around 500kg with our stuff in, and the rest of it was a real mix of driving and driven a little gentler than the first time i worked out, and got 30mpg which i thought was pretty good.
The auto box is really smooth and i am pleased with it, good for reversing with a trailer no clutch work!!!:D

One of the first jobs I do when I get a new TDi 300 is to take off the viscous and replace it with .................................nothing !!!!!

I leave the fan in the back of the car with a spanner, just in case I get caught in stationary traffic, but to be honest I've never had to put it back on.

They are always fanless, right through summer (33°plus over here), even when towing.

However I do make sure that the system has been flushed and refilled with new coolant, replace the thermostsat and any dodgy-looky rubber hoses, replace the plastic radiator and thermostat housing plugs with brass ones etc etc.

Imo so long as the cooling system is in good order, they don't need a fan.

Wouldnt it be easier to switch the injun off?

That would allow the engine to overheat, if it's likely to get hotter you need the engine running and the fan on, to create a draft over the radiator.

You'd have to switch the friggin engine off to put the fan back on:D
