MOT’d until 6/1/13

Ready for work or play
I bought this car completely standard 18 months ago, during the last 18 months the following modifications have been made.

About The Car

I bought this Discovery 18 months ago to use as a run about. I need a 4x4 as I do a fair bit of work on a farm. So although the vehicle has been “off road” it hasn’t been bounced about a “pay & play” site every weekend or been used off road heavily. The extent of “off roading” that it’s done has been no more than around stubble fields or farm tracks etc.

I have used the car daily for work since I bought it and never had any major problems with it.

In all honesty the modifications that I have I done to the Landrover are at least a bit excessive for my needs.

The car is a very solid car and not like the usual rot boxes that are becoming more and more common. Despite the high mileage the Discovery still runs and drives very well.

I now have to sell my much loved Landy as my new job comes with a company car. I don’t have the space to keep the Disco as a second car, otherwise I would.

Modifications Carried Out By “Me”

  • 2” Bearmach suspension lift – HD blue springs
  • Bearmach Tuff Back +2 shock absorbers
  • Front steering guard
  • Front & Rear diff guards
  • 1” Wheel spacers (approved for road use)
  • 245/75/16 Maxxis Buckshot Mudder Mud Terrain tyres (20-30% worn)
  • EGR blanking plate fitted – to increase MPG
  • Decat pipe – to increase MPG
  • Viscous fan removed (included in the sale) to increase MPG
  • Smoke screw on fuel pump has been tuned to increase MPG
Work Carried Out By Previous Owner

The previous owner was a middle aged man who used this Landrover for work for a while and then as a second car. When I bought this Landy it was completely standard and had NEVER been used off the road. So much to the point that the transfer lever was seized solid as it had never ever been into the low box or difflock.

The previous owner had spent a fortune on having this vehicle professionally welded using repair panels for its MOT 2 years ago. Following all the welding work the cylinder head cracked, which he had replaced by a reputable Landrover Specialist.

They fitted a new head gasket and a reconditioned head, then unfortunately he fell ill so had to sell it, which is when I bought it 18 months

  • Rear arches have been replaced
  • Boot floor has been replaced
  • Both sills have been replaced
  • Head gasket and recon head fitted
Work Carried Out By “Me”

Since I have owned this vehicle I have meticulously maintained it and I have replaced several parts due to fair wear and tear. I have not always fitted brand new parts but items that I have bought second hand are known to be good from reputable breakers.

Several filter services which include:
Oil filter (new)
Air filter (new)
Fuel filter (new)
Automatic Transmission Filter (new)
All running gear oils changed ( front and rear diff oil / transfer box oil / automatic transmission fluid changed)
Heater Plugs
New Gates timing belt and improved bottom pulley fitted approx 15,000 miles ago
New cam belt tensioner
Water pump (at same time as cambelt)
Front & Rear brake pads (new)
Battery (new)
Alternator (recon)
Starter Motor (recon)
Transfer box (good second hand)
All prop shaft UJ’s have been replaced
Rubber doughnut on rear prop has been replaced

Engine – 300Tdi

The engine in the Discovery overall is sweet. Its starts first time every time, it doesn’t cough or splutter. There are no sinister knocks/bangs or clangs.

The engine oil and filter have been changed several times since I have owned the Discovery.

The engine has the usual 300Tdi oil “weeps” as you would suspect. When you park it up overnight there is maybe one drop of oil on the drive which is no bigger than a 10 pence piece.

I check the oil level regular as clock work and the amount it weeps is hardly noticeable from one week to the next.

I have had the viscous fan removed (which will be included in the sale) a decat pipe fitted, an EGR blanking kit fitted and I also had a garage tweak the smoke screw on the injector pump which combined improves the MPG massively.

On a full tank of fuel I regularly get 450+ miles just plodding about with a mixture of town, motor way and farm tracks.

The coolant is clean and it never uses a drop of water.

Drivetrain

Overall the drive train is in good condition, I regularly grease the UJ’s which have recently been replaced.

The transfer box has recently been replaced ( second hand unit) whilst the transfer box was out I also fitted a good condition second hand shaft which connects the gearbox to the transfer box as the old one was worn.

The diffs, transfer box, Hi/Lo and diff lock all work as they should do.

There is the odd little clunk during over run. But this is perfectly normal and acceptable on a 4x4 of this nature.

The gear box selects gear, kicks down and changes perfectly. Again this has been serviced.

There is a bit of a clonk when selecting Reverse from a stand still. This clonk is as the “slack” in the drive train get taken up and is common and acceptable on most Landrovers.

There is no play in any of the wheel bearings or steering components.

The front and rear differentials are a bit weepy. This is a common thing.

The front swivels have been filled with Landrover 1 SHOT grease; the swivel seals are also a bit weepy. Again this is a common thing.

As the tyres are mud terrains they do create a bit of a rumbling vibration when you get past 30mph. The level of this rumbling vibration differs according to tyre pressure, speed and road surface.

Brakes

The front and rear brakes are in good order with plenty of life left in them.
ABS all works as it should do.
Handbrake works as it should do; the handbrake shoes do very occasionally bind ever so slightly when reversing.

Exterior

Overall the exterior is in average condition. There is nothing major, there are however a few scratches etc on most panels, mainly from the odd low tree branch or Tesco’s car park. Some of them would polish out if required.

One of the bumper brake light lenses has broken and has been covered with a bit of tape. I have never got round to replacing the lens.

The front inner wings, which is another place where Discovery’s are prone to rotting are good and solid and have been Waxoyl’d by the previous owner and also by me.

Alloy wheels are in fair condition.

The tow bar is in good working order as are all the electrics to the tow bar.

Interior

Generally the interior is in average condition. Albeit a bit dusty with a few muddy footprints on the carpet, and a few muddy dog paw prints on the dash board! I will however give the car a spring clean this coming week.

The driver’s leather seat is a bit worn. The carpet on the back of the back seats is missing. The carpet was missing when I bought it.

The twin sunroofs work and don’t leak.

All of the main electrics work fine with no problems.

The rear windows have never worked all the time I have owned the car (could be a fuse or something really easy. I have never checked.)

Central locking and alarm works.

There is the odd crack in bits of the plastic trim around the gear selector, the boot door interior trim is missing, as is the driver’s door pocket. All of which were missing when I bought it.

The centre plastic around the radio is held in with 2 self tapping screws. Again, was like this when I bought it.

It is probably worth noting that when the transfer box was replaced the speedometer drive gear in the transfer box must be the wrong one. This causes no running issues; it does however mean that the speedometer reads approx 10mph fast. I am assured that this would be an easy replacement but it has never bothered me.

Summary

In summary this is a good solid and honest Discovery. Granted that it is not in showroom condition, but it is still presentable and runs and drives exactly as you would expect.

It is just as happy on the motorway cruising at 70mph as it is driving down a country lane or farm track.

It is ready for work or play and I am sure still has plenty of life left in for somebody else to enjoy.

As you can see from the description the previous owner and I have spent a lot of time and money looking after this vehicle as well as modifying it. Although it isn’t in showroom condition visually, mechanically it is very good.

I have owned a few Disco’s now and they have all been different, this one however has been the best all rounder.

I have tried to be as honest as I can, and I am happy to answer any questions any body may have, either by email or phone/text 07739338765.
