Hi all

I am close to taking the plunge and getting an L322 to replace my trusty P38.

I am keen to arm myself with a diagnostic tool from day 1, but cannot find a decent thread on here discussing the various options. Can somebody point me to one? If there isn't one, then perhaps this should become it....

Particularly keen to hear from L322 owners who have looked at what is available and made a choice, are you happy with it?

I have Nanocom for the P38 and apart from a couple of minor issues I think it is great, sadly no option to use this on the L322.

TIA

Cheers

Jerry
ps yes I know it is going to be a reliability nightmare and cost a fortune to fix compared to the P38..... let's face it, how may people proactively buy an expensive diagnostic tool before they have even bought the vehicle!!

Easy to use, cheap diagnostic has to be the All Comms from RSW

Proper diagnostics would have to be the faultmate extreme

I have both and there great !

Wise choice - every L322 owner needs their own Gear for diagnosis...

Depend on what you want the Diagnostics to do:

Basic Fault Code Reading, Fault Clearing and minor settings tweaks - RSW All Comms www.rswsolutions.com - about £200-220 delivered from the US, you'll have to pay the Import Duty payable (mine was £16), this is the basic choice, reads codes and allows you to clear them down, Calibrates the EAS system and can be used to set the Parking sensor Volume and change the Steering wheel and seat movement options! Is not VIN locked but needs a Laptop to run on.

Further up the scale with the ability for Live Data and more setting changes are the Bearmach Hawkeye and the GAPDiagnostics IIDTool, IIDTool is around £260-£300 and is very handy and powerful little device, can be pluggedinto the car and you use the onboard message centre as the display so no need for Laptop or powersupply, but does rely on a working message centre! VIN Locked.

Hawkeye is similar to the IIDTool but is a handheld unit, quite expensive at £350-380 but cannot calibrate the EAS which is a BIG let down...not sure if it is VIN locked (I don't think so) you may even find you'll need different interface leads ar additional cost, but I have not looked into that to far!

At the top end you have the Snap On Solus which is great, but very very expensive, has the ability to work on muliple makes of vehicles if you have the unlocks and is not VIN locked.

But the very best any Land Rover owner can have is the Faultmate Extreme, comes in around £1000, but has the ability to interact with every single system and ECU, with options to save and write settings, tweak BCU settings, actuate various items like powering the windows, checking door locks, seeing live data on switch postions to prove they are working and wiring is sound etc....VIN locked, can be used standalone but the power features are only truly available when used on a laptop.

I have the RSW All Comms which does me well and I have used it on a few other members vehicles to clear ECU's and recalibrate the EAS....

May look to upgrade to the IIDTool as the Extreme is out oreach at the moment....but it does me fine.

Do note, the All Comms is up to VIN 5A999999

While I think the IIDTool, Hawkeye and Faultmate will do up o the 2009 models....best check that out first!

Thank you - fantastic response as usual!

Out of the options mentioned GAPDiagnostics looks like the one for me. When I sell the Nanocom hopefully that will raise enough cash that the cost to change won't be too high! One of the things I like about the Nanocom is that I can keep it in the car and always have it with me if I need it.

When you say working message centre, are you hinting at the display pixel problem or is there another problem with the message centre that I need to be wary of?

Cheers

Pixel issue is one thing, but whats happens if the Instrument panel and message centre is the thing you're trying to diagnose?? Very rare as it is just a display and not an ECU as such, but it is driven from the BCU and Instrument Panel ECU's so if they are up the swanny, you won't be able to use the IIDTool! I suppose in those extreme rare instances, a trip to a Dealer wouldn't be too bad....

using the cars display for the diagnostics sounds like a pain in the back side.

plus most L322's at the 8 year mark will have fading pixels in the screen making it unreadable

does anyone know if there is a pixel repair place within 50 miles or so of the sheffield area

I thought the same until I tried the IID tool from GAP Diagnostics, but it is really easy to use. Best diagnostic tool on the market for the L322, unless you have £1k or more to spend

You reckon it's the best for the price ??

Can you calibrate the EAS ?

You are also snookered if there is water in the kit in the boot N/S quarter as it can stop the display working completely.

Eh - no, water in the boot can stop the sat nav/tv/terrain response TFT screen in the centre console working.

The IID tool used the pixelated display in the main instrument binacle.

It is very good functionality for the price, All Comms is good as well, but does not cover as much as the IID tool or 06 onwards
