Hi all, i'm new here and i really need some help, my father in law has a series 2 (1971) 2 and a quarter ltr petrol (chassis no. 315006919 88") which has just failed its mot and needs a new steering column and steering box. he has been told this part is now obselete and not available anymore. as you can probably understand he's is rather upset as its his pride and joy. if there is any where anyone knows of where we could purchase a new or recon column and box we would be forever greatfull.
thanks very much

what do the 'eggspurts' reckon is wrong with it? bear in mind most MOT folk dint know much about these old vehicles and it may just be that it needs adjusting or a new bearing installed

How original does he want to keep it? A Series III box and column will fit fairly easily, but will need Series III wheel, and probably a different horn & indicator switch.

Right i've been round today and got some more info... basically it failed its mot amongst other things, excessive play in the steering the response from the wheel to actual steering was to great, i've posted so pictures for you too see. both bearings at each end of the inner column in side the actual box seem very loose, the part which moves along on the machined spiral part of the inner column seems to have excessive play also, and the spiral machined part of the inner column as you might be able to see from the picture has some sort off defect on it not sure how this could be caused its got what seems to be a few chips off the edge of it... obviosly the best way to check all theses factors would be to compare to a new part but thats just not possible we're told, unless any one knows otherwise?... have a look and see what you think...
Much appreciated,
