Right, brought my 04 plate defender 3 weeks ago, looking at receipts it had 2 front wheel bearings 6000 miles ago but the mot i had done showed slight play in one of the wheel bearings?! I have searched but no definitive answer, is there any adjustment in the bearing? Or is it a new one :(

i'm affraid its a new 1 as they are 1 tighten only in the hubs you have fitted
had the same with my 56 plate 90 last year, i have soarced some 300tdi disco hubs to replace the ones on my 110 crew cab so i can strip and clean/re-grease and re-tighten in the future.

bearings are the same as earlier ones with idiot spacer in between setting brg preload either worn bearing ,nut coming loose or originaly poorly set ,check which

Ok il take the flange off tomorrow and makesure the hub nut is tight but failing that il have to sort a new one!

Thanks for the advice!

spacers come in different sizes you can shorten one just enough to give no free play and theres is probably enough room to fit earlier nuts and tab washer , new bearings stc4382 or rtc3429 only use timken not cheap kit spacer between shouild be sized to hub

paddocks do timkin (the best and same as LR sell) think they are about £32 a pair (LR charge £64 ) dont forget a new hub seal and make sure you change races as well ;)

dont know what there selling i know what stc4382 timken cost rtc3429 same brg timken costs even less ,i would only use timken abd the ones i get from britpart come in timken orange boxes and you can tell quality when building units as with genuine brgs shimming says the same other makes tolerances arent as accurate shimming out sometimes upto 10 thou as well of look and feel of brg

pretty certain they sell britpart and timkin (but cant seem to access their site atm to check ) the rest of britpart products dont give you much confidence to buy thier bearings does it.
must get cracking on replacing those hubs soon (well before they start giving out anyway) be good if i could get the new bearing that cheap.

timkens timken which ever shop you use cant you just remove idiot spacer and fit the old two nuts ,never tried myself yet as havent needed to ,give us a shout when you need some i give you a price,

shirley the "idiot spacer" is part of the hub machining or that was what i was told by a LR machanic

i would have thought it was seperate and matched during assembly so later servicing could be done by idiots, later transfer boxes use similar spacer to set intermediate brgs ,but i havent had one in bits for 6 months so couldnt be positive

well if i get around to it will find out soon enough :D
got 2 holidays to get through first though

paddocks are selling the timkin bearing stc 4382 at £7.00 + vat, just type stc4382g into there search bar

OK, I'm not a grammar fascist, but who's nicked all the full stops (& therefore multiple sentences) from the previous postings. It makes for very difficult reading.
