hi all,
I have a defender td5, running quite well but when I stopped at a location leaving the car running I was not able to drive in either 4 high or 4 low when I wanted to leave. I could only "move" it when I would put it in diff lock. any clues what maybe the problem?

Sounds like you have either snapped a half shaft or one of the drive members has worn away

Sounds right, put it in gear and get someone to look and see which prop shaft is spinning that narrows it down front to rear. Then which ever prop is spinning say the front jack each wheel up and spin it and see if the prop spins. If one side doesn't spin it then that's your problem.

Sounds odd but take it out of diff lock and apply the hand brake then try and pull away (with hand brake on). If it moves then it is either one of the rear 1/2 shafts (or drive members), if it doesn't it is one of the front ones (or possibly a CV joint). Don't try driving it with hand brake on, its only for fault diagnosis, if you need to move it any distance put diff lock back in.

Take all the end caps off of the drive flanges and get someone to look around and see which halfshaft is spinning

unfortunately while driving in diff lock busted the front diff case and damaging everything inside (I was only going 40 km/h though)

Sounds like you have found the cause (although not the best way of finding it!) Did you try the hand brake method or look to see which prop shaft was spinning, if so I assume it indicated a 'front' issue? Has it been clonking for a while before?

no warning sound, but noticed that the rear half shafts are welded to the flange. is that a normal procedure for these shafts?

Both the front cv joints had been welded to the flanges on my last one. The last owner must have been a right tight ass
