my 2.25d has the plastic plug, two thick browns to starter and another wire to the dash lamp.

I thought the ign sent power down the bulb to the alt which powers the fields, then it earths via the alts body. Once it starts to generate power the 12v counteracts the ign feeds 12v and no current flows.. bulb off.

The big browns one are connected to the starter/battery. So you just need the three (two if you just have one brown) to get the alt working.

Yeah but we int on about rusty old boneshakers we is on about smooth sophisticated defenders 300tdi's to be precise :p :p

its not needed
fank fook for that..

Unplug it and see what happens ................................ :D
Are yu daring me??

Are you in the "flat" now??

Try it and let us know if your defender falls apart like a clowns car :D :D :D

Nope in pikey wagon for the weekend As I have a poorly blocked up disco to get under and rip the rear axle off. if I don't post tomorrow send LZIR wiv a noo ribcage for a 63 series pikey..

Bricks and blocks of wood mate ;)

Get his wheels under there too :)

tis my disco but axle is going to wlm. At the mo it's on 2no 4" solid conc blocks under each of the front radius arms and 4 of the same under the chassis rails near the B posts. prob is, it's a bit finely balanced. Plus the Aframe bolts have seized. So any battering or hammering and the fooking things starts rocking

Wow, this has traveled far, thanks for all your help and input, have ordered a new alternator this morning, but to just through another spanner in the works the parts place said that my 1996/7 defender 90 has a 45amp alternator and the earlier ones had the 65amp which I would of thought it would've been the other way round. What do you think ?????????????

Well ordered new alternator, came wrong, found out the the one I had was a 100amp, re-ordered and was the right one, fitted it today and it all works fine again, charging nicely, found out the brown and yellow wire is a feed from somewhere and the white wire doese'nt do anything plugged in or not. So a word of warning - be careful when turning over the engine via alternator, don't know why it did it as have done this many times on various vehicles big or small and never had a problem. happy again now.:)
