Defender 300tdi chassis (1997)

Getting mine put onto a galv chassis so looking for someone to take my old one off my hands.
It's been welded before, but has also had a waxoil coating at some stage before I got it (2 years ago)
Not in prime condition, but probably good enough for someone who knows how to look after them etc.
Apart from being old, no damage to it.

You would not be able to use the chassis on another vehicle, the ID and VIN No is tied to the chassis. If you rechassis yours then the ID should be transferred onto the new chassis, the only thing you can do with the original, legally, is to scrap it.
 
o thats a bit crap i was after a long term project
but f it cant be on the road one day not worth anything to me

Sadly not because it's ID is on the rechassied one.

If you cut out the chassis number and weld in new metal then the chassis has no ID. So if you did a build from parts you would have to go for a Q plate, however if you presented the vehicle for inspection for it's Q plate with a used chassis the inspector would want to know where it came from. You would need a receipt (as you would for all the parts when going for a Q plate) The receipt would need the original ID on it to be valid, but that's still running around on it's new chassis, so you would be refused.

This is why there are so many V5's going on Ebay, You could use a V5 ID and do your build with the second hand chassis with the number missing and away you go. Not strictly legal but impossible to prove.

This is also why Landrovers get stolen so often, the stolen parts go into rebuilds or whole vehicles just get their ID's swapped.
 
It depends how the op has gone about reshelling it.
If the chassis numbers are present you could apply for the original log book and the op would have dificulty explaining how A, his chassis has no numbers, or B, how he has a new chassis with the same number as this older one, unless he has gone about it correctly and registered the new chassis with the dvla, in which case im sure it would have to have a totally new chassis number.
Ive had these problems with rally cars in the past.

if i was selling a chassis because id replaced mine i would make certain that that part of the chassis with the numbers on had been cut out and kept for refference should it be required at a later date

If you buy a brand new chassis from marslands etc it will come without a number on it. It's up to you to transfer your existing number to it and then scrap the original (or at least cut out the bit with the chassis number on). If you want to keep the ID/reg number you have to retain the original number or you get a Q plate.

Obviously you cant have two vehicles running around with the same chassis number hence my original comment that a second hand chassis is scrap unless you are prepared to bend the law a lot.

Yes I would be having the ID transferred properly onto the new one so the original would need to be put onto a Q plate.
I didn't realise quite how difficult it would be for someone to do that !
In which case, I guess this would only be suitable for someone to build an offroad only car.
Unless I can sell it to the place where I'm getting mine swapped, and they can provide a receipt etc to the next person.

Does that sound like something that could be done ? Afraid I don't know much in this area !

Aye that sounds right, it says in the regs somewhere that if a second hand chassis is used, it needs an SVA test and a Q plate anyway....so you can;t even cut the plate out and tell the next person to weld their own in

Ok, so if it was put through an sva test, would they then just give it a Q plate ? Or would that be done separately ?

What about if someone bought it solely for off road use ?
Would it need anything done for that ?

I would cut your losses and weigh it in, it would be entering a very grey area, unless someone is desperate and you could cut the various bits off to be used as 'repair sections'
 
Ok, so what happens if you change the dumb irons for the genuine reason the have rusted, and/or the chassis needs welding in the area of the chassis number due to it rusting away? You have to weld it to be safe an get an mot so your chassis number has gone anyway. By law you need 1 VIN which is the chassis plate on the servo. Yes you could get the number stamped back on (what sort of place does this by the way) but I don't know where you would get someone to do that. Grind the chassis number off/cut it out or whatever and name your price - will be some use to someone. Obviously it's easy for some dodgy characters to fit stolen parts etc this way and the police are aware of it but if everything is genuine and adds up your ok, unless the police can prove its a stolen chassis, which is impossible to prove as its not stolen, it's yours.
