Hi all

I will start a Defender resto thread soon but currently I have some questions.

The Defender is a 1992 ex fire service 200tdi CSW. Engine is spot on, 104k on the clock, pulls like a train. I plan on doing a full refurb, new colour, wheels, interior etc.

I also have an S reg 300tdi 50th anniversary Discovery 300Tdi Auto that is pretty rotten and I plan on breaking.

I see people have mentioned fitting Disco axles it earlier Defenders to give disc braking to the rear and also the ability to fit later style alloys. What's involved in the process and any issues with prop couplings etc?

Also have read about fitting Disco transfer boxes too. Would the one on the Disco I have available for parts be suitable?

Kind regards

you can fit transfer box easy enough just swap your handbrake assembly and speedo drive ,rear axle if yours is 92 110 wont be a straight swap ,youd need a longer rear prop and disco axle isnt load rated as high as the salisbury axle , you can use hubs ,wheel bearings, drive members from the 300 disco plus some parts for salisbury disc brake axle to convert your drum set up

Ah thanks for the reply. So doing that way you get the best of both worlds, keep the existing axle and convert it. Great.

What about the front axles? I had read that due to having the earlier hubs I cannot fit newer style wheels. The Disco has boost alloys which I had wanted to fit. Can you do similar and rebuild the front axle so it incorporates the later hubs, or just swap them over?

front axle will fit ok and if rear is converted the later wheels will fit both axles ,you will need the disco front radius arms too as they are wider and defender didnt use the wider arms till the 300 tdi came out whereas disco only used wider arms
