Trans Box LT 230 T

Hi I have a spare transfer box out of a Disco 1997 300TDI, I'm told the R380 gear box that the out put shaft is different. and also the ratios could be different.
My Land Rover is a 1997 300TDI Defender pick up have changed the oil and noticed metal filings so wondering about the compatibility.
Also if this is not compatible does any one know where I can get a spare one. Cheers Neil.

The gear ratios are different. Disco box has a higher gearing in high ratio only, low gears are the same. It is a common change and good for drivability and mpg in a truck that is lightly used. If carrying or more so towing heavy loads over the hill and down the dale like I do the low ratio transfer box is best.
As far as I know shaft wise it is a straight swop.

It's the same shaft I believe, I thought it was only the V8 that was different (the V8 shaft is a different length ?) and with1st and 5th being different on Discovery V8 R380s

I thought the gearboxes on the 300tdi Disco were tyhe same as the 300tdi Defender it was the LT230 that had differing ratio ...

It is the LT 230 OP is asking about, he has a spare from a Disco.

Thanks for that it does a bit of work so will look around for a spare to rebuild and install. Also it looks like the speedo drive is different.

You just pull the speedo drive out & swap over

Handbrake set up on disco & LR are diffent so may just need to swap over.

Disco box is ok for towing just expect to be a gear lower when on the hills.

Thanks for the info lads, I think the ratio should be 1.4/1 and you can buy these gears separately but also have managed to buy another one so hopefully I can make a good one up out of the two.
