Decisions....

My options are to go through my 3dr 200tdi discovery and start touching up all the bits i need to, welding, bigger wheels, suspension etc. Or do I sell it as it is(light bar, snorkel, tires, cat 1 alarm) and start from scratch with a hopefully rust free 5dr 300tdi.

What would you do?

not bother and buy a toyota land cruiser

... all depends how much work you have to do, and how much cash you got. bit of a silly question really

Toyota's out the question sorry, Land rover for me! I didn't explain too well before so I'll try again! If I decide I'm keeping mine then I'll probably strip the interior to see what rust is around and repair if needed, it needs welding to arches and light holder things, maybe lift it and change the tires for bigger ones and sand it all down and re paint, including axles and bits.

As I would like a 5 door I've been thinking shall I just sell Mine and start a fresh. That way I wont have old tires on my hands to sell on, hopefully avoid having welding done and it'll just be a fresh start. I know so much more now than when I first started on mine about 5 years ago.

I know its my choice ultimately but being a typical male I need pointing in the right direction with decision making. Oh and cash is a little tight right now!

if you like what you have stick with it , you will be doing well ti find a rust free 300TDI ,but good luck

you start ripping out the carpets and your guarenteed to have a shock somewhere i would say expect to have many nights welding

whats your reason for you wanting a 5 door disco is it for family commitments or just personal choice.

Personal choice, easier for storing stuff in the back. No other reason than that!

That thought did cross my mind and she's never let me down yet. Just not sure if I have the enthusiasm to strip it all out and put lots of hours into it if needed. Also I would have to try and hire a garage as I have nowhere I can work on it with power.

and what makes ya think that you will find a 300 tdi rust free and problem free

if one did exist im sure the owner wouldnt part with it
buy another one you could be buying all of someone elses problems

Heres my twopence ...

It depends what you want, you have had the motor 5 years and presumably have spent a lot of time underneath it and fixing, maintaining and generally pratting around with it you should know it pretty much inside out, how its been stored/driven/abused/serviced over the last 5 years and what to expect bodywise. Some say the 3 door 200s are the more desirable as they are becoming rarer, 5 door 300s like mine are everywhere but tbh (300 facelift) id rather have what ive got to what you have but thats just personal preference. Your probably a lot more knowledgable about landys now and so should know what to look for but you could still buy somebody elses problems with no idea how its really been looked after.

Ive had mine about 4 years now and knew nothing about Landys, now ive just spent FOUR MONTHS

getting all the rust sorted on my landy but the way I see it is it can now last forever (the old trigger broom joke: Ive had the same broom for the last 14 years, ive only changed the brush 5 times and the handle 3

) and my 9 year old lad has got his eye on it for his 1st car so its gotta last another 8 at least

Just thought I would add when I say 4 months it could have been done much sooner but there was A LOT more work than I had anticipated. Have a good look under the carpets, boot, bulkhead, inner wings, rear wings, battery tray, headlamp boxes, sills, chassis etc etc etc and then make your choice, you may not have a choice......

Thanks for the advice guys, especially mrnice it made a lot of sense. I suppose I'm just at that point of thinking I'll never get it done or to the standard I want it. But realistically with my finances at the moment I probably stand a much better chance of getting mine fixed up how I want it than buying a new one and starting again.

So...............time to find a garage to hire and get stuck into stripping it down! Then more than likely buy a mig welder too! And when my missus comes moaning that she's never seeing me and I spend more time with the landy than her I'll tell her who's to blame..........MrNoisy for posting all those pics up and making me aspire to have a landy like his!!

haha, I know where your coming from mate, my mrs was moaning I was either at work or under the landy all the time, luckilly she loves the landy and when I explained that both work and landy HAVE to be done and at least im not down the boozer every night instead like a lot of blokes she kinda thought about this for a second, shrugged her shoulders and said "oh yeah" and went back in the house. Shes been cool ever since.

Can you not do most of the work outside your house or somewhere similiar? ive had to do all mine except the actually welding which was done in a barn by the lad who owned the welder - All prep, stripping, grinding, plate fabrication, drilling, painting, seam sealing, rust proofing etc was done by me outside the house (it was only in the barn for 20 hours) ive had worklights, home made tarpaulin tents, a big warm army coat a lot of coffee and a huge amount of determination and its finally paid off!

Fix up the 200 it will be worth more sooner as they are becoming sought after items will be ten years before 300 become rare
