Sport Damaged Piston and block

In the past few weeks i had my RRS Supercharged 2009 4.2L engine that started to overheat with a couple of coolant problems, just two weeks ago while driving on the highway the car started to overheat with lack of power, just a minutes after stopping and checking the engine i got an oil burning smell and a huge fume came from the exhaust and under the hood, opened the hood and found huge leak near battery that looks to be coming from the PCV.

Got the car to a garage and after they opened the engine they told me that the piston broke and scratched deep the block that it's unrepairable which needs a new engine. (please check attached pics)

may i know if it's possible to change the blocks only without changing all the engine or is it better to swap with a new engine ?

They may be quoting you for a short engine which is just the crankcase and internals if they can find one without having to buy a new one which would be mucho $$.
More likely they are going to buy a complete second hand engine and transplant it which would save a lot of labour costs stripping the engine down.
Have they quoted you anything at this stage ?

I'd opt for a used replacement complete engine.

Personally I'm wary of swapping engines out unless there is a way of determining how the replacement engine was treated beforehand or the wear of its internals and ancillaries.

Swapping an engine out with an unknown entity could be fine. Or it could be a headache in the making. You can get exchange engines that have been rebuilt and have a warranty. You could pull your engine and if it it is going to be reborn you can do the crank bearings and any other bits that may be coming due.

Is that engine an alloy block with "nikasil" treated bores or are they sleeved?

If Wiki is correct it is showing as cast iron liners so a rebuild could be another option or a recon engine would be a nice alternative to an unknown second hand engine depending on budget.

Good used motor is the way to go, unless you want to spend £7,500 plus on a short engine together with all the labour costs to swap it over.

What's opinions on the cause of that piston failure, could it be a broken top ring?

Water damage i would think.

There's a S/C L322 on ebay with a suspected HG issue, (White smoke/Steam), the vendor is 'carswithnoreserve'.
Suppose if you got it for a decent price and it was still running fine it would be worth a punt, do both gaskets and Bob's your mothers brother??
S/C model appeals to me but it seems to be a rather expensive engine to replace, should it go bang like OPs.
Are the superchargers themselves bullet-proof I ask?

I hadn't read the first part of the post thoroughly enough and forgot the bit about coolant loss bit.
Had a Renault once that had a piston crown that looked like that and that was a broken top ring started the failure.
Must be water damage over a long period, my current Toyota came to me after being driven at speed into a deep river crossing, the water didn't compress then but piston remained undamaged, just the conrod snapped.
Seen others where the crank has snapped even, not the piston.

I'm going for overheating..... HG gasket fails, coolant level plummets, head warps at that cylinder, heat increase thus piston ring gaps close beyond tolerance and say 'fulk this' and ultimately disintegrate causing the crown damage and cylinder gouging.
Engine is toast.
Temperature gauge would of screamed if it could!

Probable causation.....blond hitch hiker

I think the OP is in Tennessee.. a UK RR on ebay maybe a bit of a wild punt !
