L320 4.2SC oil pan removal?

Hi, anyone know how to or done a sump removal on a 4.2 SC L320? I’m changing a piston on one and removed everything so far including heads in situ. I’m hoping someone is going to tell me that the engine doesn’t need to come out after all that

I don't know about the engine but i think the tailgate is safe

It’s full of cylinder heads and all sorts of other goodies at the moment lol! I’m thinking transfer case off at least and possible steering rack to do it with engine in but I know on the L322 you need to take engine out not sure on L320

Can you access all the bolts ? Never looked at L320, but on several cars I had to undo the mounts & jack the engine up a bit to make clearance between the sump pan & cross-member.

And if you can actually get the piston and conrod past the crank!!!

Got the cylinder heads off mate

Aha, that's a different scenario then.

Sorry, don’t know about removing the sump, I’m not touching the pistons, just the heads off.

Are you doing the timing chains also ?

Any tips re timing chains and guide replacement ? I’ll be doing the same once I get the heads back (burnt out ex valve, skimmed and new guides)

Hi

I've had the heads done (L322 4.2 SC, burnt out exhaust valve) but noticed the timing chains looked fairly stretched (180k miles) and wondered if I should change them ? If so, how did you get on with sourcing them... cost etc ?

Must be a good idea to do the chains and maybe the sprockets while it's in bits.

I got a full chain set and tensioners kit all my parts came from Rimmer Bros which is local to me but is UK delivery anywhere if you ring them they sell OE, OEM & Aftermarket LR parts (I definitely wouldn’t go for aftermarket on something like a chain)
