Hi, im considering buying a defender 90, either a 200tdi or possibly 300tdi. i want your opinion on this as my daily commute totals up to 70 miles a day, is this wise for an older vehicle? i would obviously be keeping a high level of maintenance and regular servicing, but im unsure as i will need to be able to rely on it.

thanks in advance!

Ben

if its in good nick then should be ok,will need regular servicing , ive a customer that runs several 300s delivering haylage country wide daily

Mines a 1986 that I totally rebuilt around 14 yrs ago and she has never ever let me down. Wouldn't want to do a 70 mile commute in her though, too rough and ready for an old git like me with a dodgy back/knee/ neck.

thanks for the fast responses! well im only 19 so i will hopefully take the discomfort ;) servicing i would definately need to stay on top of. im currently on the lookout for a tidy 90 if you know of any? im not too fussed on its milage at this point as long as the engine is well looked after.

I use my 1993 90 200 Tdi as a daily driver. So far, so good. Fuel economy isn't great, but I enjoy driving it so much that it's a price I'm willing to pay!

my fuel economy sucks at the moment, currently getting 27mpg out of a new 2.0 petrol (not landrover). i think i will do the decat if its not already done.

If you're only 19, then a 'fender 90 will do you just great, but be aware that by the time you get to 25 you'll be ready for the more comfortable Disco to ease your back pain and reduce the damage to your ears; probably noise induced tinitus by then. :D

Only if @BenV turns into a wuss. All terrains or road bias tyres will make an improvement in the sound, disco transfer box will improve cruising speed if it's a tdi or better and I've done a clutch pedal upgrade which has made a huge difference in it's driveability. First thing on the list should be decent security or and a tracker.

I've got a disco transfer box in my 200tdi 110, that means I get 32 mpg on my 50 miles per day to work and back. I've also fitted lots of lead flashing tape, and camping mats and partitioned the cab from the body it's a lot quieter than standard., I can hear the radio quite easily. I am quite happy going any distance and using it as a Daily transport.

Hi bud, I've been doing 110 mile commute (there and back) for the past 10 months in my td5 defender!

I change oil and filters every six thou, and change g/box and t/box oil every 9000. I invested in some nkg soundproofing for the rear, and I achieve 28-31mpg every week!

In.my opinion it feels better than it ever did in the past! Go for it bud, you've gotta drive what you love at the end of the day!
