alright - just fixed up my intake. lots of oil in there from the cyclone breather, which i gather means it (the breather) needs a good cleaning.

i'd like to completely avoid the thing spewing oil into my intake in the future, though. anyone running the breather NOT hooked up to their intake? any issues doing so?

well, the turbo's kind of immaterial, i should think... to this issue, anyway.

where do you route the vapor hose to, from the breather? or is it just a bare vapor port @ the breather? either way, you have a filter on it, or just let it dump free?

since i really just needed to know if those doing so had any issue not running the vapor hose to the intake, you were somewhat useful! :clap2:

E bay oil catch tank twenty quid, works so far on mine no oil in manifold or pipework.

nice looking setup, lynall. how often do you have to empty that thing?

also, is that just a flipped up stock exhaust manifold? any particular reason for mounting the turbo higher?

Its a standard defender 200tdi turbo engine, same block and head as the disco lump, but the manifolds and turbo are different as is the timing chest and all its ancilleries.
Ive not emptied it once yet as theres no fluid showing on the sight glass.
I think part of the problem is with the std piping is it slopes towards the filter assy so any residue naturally runs towards the filter instead of back to the engine, this is the only reason i can think of as my pipe runs uphill to the catch tank.

To atmosphere is okay unless wading etc, especially if the engine stops for any reason, whilst under water.

right cheers mate

im possibly converting to tdi and im rather disgusted at the filth inside tdi intakes, so sorting that breath would be a top of the list job for me.

as a 90% off roader though atmosphere is probably not a good idea then, but catch tank would be lovely :)

i suppose turbos tend to vent gallons of oil into the intake aswell dont they, or do you immediatly get smoke when that happens?

i only becuase id be looking at getting close to v8 performance and as such would no doubt be upgrading the intercooler and i dont want to fill it with oil after ive spent time getting it all clean and tidy in there...

sorry for partial hijack, ended up thinking out loud

cheers :)

No turbos shouldnt vent any oil at all.
But in truth they always pass a little which gets worse as the motor gets older.
I cant think of any small turbo diesel where there hasnt been any trace of oil in the intake system with a closed breather system.

no sweat on the hijack, similar question (same question? hah). i like the idea of a catch tank and an exit hose routed high in the event of wading. got a response over on the compD forum of a cummins drag engine running a catch tank w/ just a filter on the exit - only purpose is monitoring blow-by. while i *like* a wading-friendly exit, i'll probably just pop a filter on the catch tank because, well... i don't wade.
