Crunchy Gears

Hi all just bought a 2004 TD5 Discovery with a known clutch/gearbox fault. On the drive back home (about 35 miles on fast A roads) the gears from 1st 2nd 3rd crunch if doing a normal gear change, if revs allowed to drop to 1000-1500 gears will go in ok, on down shift they seem to crunch whatever I try to do, 4th and 5th gears are fine, when in gear and driving no whines or rattles. When stationary 1st gear and reverse can be engaged with no problem, clutch doesn't slip an bite is half way up the peddle travel, also when I got home there was a strong smell of gearbox oil and the leak is that bad that it has caked the exhaust with gearbox oil. Drained gearbox and filled to correct level with MTF 94, problems still the same (hoping for a quick fix but not to be), any way the thing now is recondition box/ second hand box or I saw these on E-Bay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220317518897&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT will these cure the crunch, has any one stripped and re-built one of these boxes before, tips and advice welcome, or should I just throw this box away and get a second hand or recon box and if so does anyone have any recommendations of who to use. I am quite good with a set of spanners, brother in law is an engineer with access to a press and time isn't a problem as not going to put it on the road until the winter time, thanks in advance, Paul
