I’m doing the timing belt on my 200tdi and found slight play in the keyway. Measured it with the callipers and the keyway is about 0.43 bigger than the key. I’m thinking of putting a wee spot of weld on it and dressing it back as we used to do this all the time where I served my apprenticeship…on a bigger scale though. Anyone tried this before. Not got much to lose as if it doesn’t work I need a new pully and damper anyway.

So long as bolt is tight the slight play wont really matter, the only bit that matters is the cambelt drive gear.

Ditto, make sure you get the bolt tight, not just nipped up
Cheers guys. The bolt wasn’t properly tight anyway as I could turn the big fat washer on it. I’m having other issues now anyway . Two bolts sheered off and another rounded trying to get the water pump and timing belt case off. Whoever done it last time must have had a gallon of Hylomer or some other stuff and filled the bolt holes with it. I think they are welded in :mad:

The three bolts that go through the timing chest cover and timing chest itself into the block around the water gallery are famous for seizing and snapping off, you will have to remove the whole timing chest cover to get the remains out, it sounds a lot scarier than what it is, but it is just lots and lots of bolts.
Once it’s all back together and the crank bolt is tightened up it is a good idea to mark the head of the bolt with some paint and the pulley so you can see if it moves in future.
