Faulty selector switch triggers the M & S lights in most cases. IMO try to read the fault codes first maybe there is something stored to enlight you.

Here is what it does:
Gear position switch
The gear position switch outputs signals that are related to the position of the selector lever assembly. The switch is installed on the selector shaft on the left side of the gearbox. Slotted mounting holes allow the switch to be turned relative to the shaft for adjustment. A fly lead connects the switch to the vehicle wiring.
Movement of the selector lever assembly turns the selector shaft, which operates six pairs of contacts in the switch.
The pairs of contacts are identified as the W, X, Y, Z, Park/Neutral and Reverse contacts. When closed:
- The W, X, Y and Z contacts output a 12V ignition supply from the BCU.
- The Park/Neutral contacts output an earth.
- The Reverse contacts output a 12V ignition supply from the passenger compartment fuse box.
The outputs of the W, X, Y and Z contacts are monitored by the EAT ECU and the BCU to determine the position of the selector lever assembly.

i had an xyz switch that would cause reverse to be hard to select (had to play the leaver back and forth to get it to engage) and the slightest touch and gear would disengage. new xyz switch and worked great after.

As Sierra says, reading fault codes and viewing live data whilst faulting is the way forward.Anything else is just guessing and potentially very expensive.
EAT faults on a DII can be caused by many things - its just not worth shooting the parts shotgun at it,do it properly and then it will work properly.

The codes are as follows,

p1842 transmission transfer case differential lock-up feedback switch circuit failure
p1843 transmission transfer case differential lock-up feedback switch open circuit

BUT, before you do anything, have you checked your battery is ok?? I had the dreaded M & S lights flashing at the weekend and following the advice on this forum I charged my battery.... NO M & S lights since (I think I may have a dodgy battery though :( )

many thanks for quick reply battery is fine i think its the aircon drip pipe which sits on top of xy switch as it has only done it when aircon is on,i just wondered what the actual code means,i dont understand the description, and are the xy switch not waterproof....
