Went to take me steering wheel off to count the splines, but abruptly stopped when I was faced with this...

The threaded part has loads of cracks running across the top and slightly down the shaft... I didn't take the but off to investigate as I thought it would just crumble away and that'd be me stuck..

Question is... Do I need a new steering column? And do I have to take everything off to swap it?

Cheers!

looks like somones hit it to remove wheel at one time ,probably not too serious ,depends how far cracks go though i would change it not too bad a job dash out the way and undo steering lock and support bracket on column then external stuff under bonnet most awkward part is support bracket getting it through bulkhead both ways

haha 'could i die because of this..' might be more appropriate?

oh dear, dash off isnt something i am looking forward to! yes i thought someone had been hitting it to get the steering wheel off.. idiots!

hmmmm, now the mind boggling question of, 36/48 spline!? is it NTC7365 or NRC7365?? my guess is NTC7365 for 36 spline.. i may aswell just fit the correct one for my landy to make life easier in the future!

Does anyone kno the part number for the colum? I have used the number from the illustrated parts list in the sticky but can't find one anywhere!

if its secure i would leave it if it was mine, grab the steering wheel and pull it about if no movement then it should be ok

Seriously bad advice as you can't see extent of damage on a safety critical component- for peace of mind and as the component isn't going to be tested for extent of damage -Replace it

Well I took the nut off and a few threads came off. The cracks only appear to be surface. Doesn't look too good tho.

I would love to replace it, but I can't find one anywhere! might have to see if I can find a scrappy with a fender in!

Unless you can be sure the damage is superficial it is not worth the risk

Karlos28, do you know if it's the 36 or 48 spline that you need?

There's a defender that was used as a doner sat outside my house but can't remember off the top of my head if the steering colum is still there but will have a look tonight and let you know if you want.

It doesn't matter to me really mate, I was going to have a look to see how many splines there are to see which boss to buy for my new steering wheel. So I can get either boss really. I'm assuming it's 36 by the steering wheel, but god only knows.

If you could have a look and see if it still there I'd be greatfull!

It's still there I would just need to remove it from the bulk head if you wanted it.
Forgot when I got home to check how many splines it had.
