Could be the temp sensor starting to fail, or bad connection.
The ecu switches the fans on if gets no signal from it.

mmmm yes been looking at that is it esey to replace also thought it might be the module on the fans thank u

well dont think it is the tempture sensor as the needle on the instrument pannel is reading fine spo anyone got any veiwes on it being the cooling fan module that sits on the fans

I believe that unit gets a varying signal from the ecu to be able to vary the fan speed! You need to see if it's got input from the ecu. And yes it's a possible culprit!

Think they all use the same set up! Plus I believe a failure will result in constant operation to protect the engine. So the control unit may be receiving incorrect signals and protecting the engine! So it may pay to get it plugged in and read the data from the ecus to see if anything is out of spec!

Early ones were relay controlled. All later ones got the fan control unit. L series was early! Even late 1.8s get the control unit!

You're looking at changing bits at random. If you're lucky it'll be the first bit you change. Post 6 I believe told you to check for a signal going to the control unit. That would narrow it down. But I think you want a miracle answer. All you'll get is possibilities because we are not there we rely on the info given. Look up the ewp threads. You'll see I'm quite knowledgeable on the cooling systems and how they operate. I've been a mechanic for twenty years as well, fair comment not a land rover one but the same system is used on many cars inc Mercedes and Chrysler Jeep for which I was a master tech! So I'm clearly clueless!:(

ok update replaced the cooling temp sensor switched the key to postion 2 engine cold fans kicked in for about 10sec on full pelt then stopped so i started car let it run temp gauge went to half way as normal fans did not kick in switched off ,switched key to postion 2 fans turned very slow started car and fans did not kick so i am guessing only seems to kick fans in when engine is stone cold. is there relays for the cooling fans thank u dawn
