Hi i will be putting some gauges in to my disco:
1.Turbo boost
2.Volts
3.water temp
4.Oil pressure

Question is: I'm thinking of putting the sender in 1 of the coolant hoses using a coolant pipe adaptor, but which hose would be best to use?
Does the coolant flow through the top hose and out of the bottom hose?

Cheers

Nice 1 - just the answer i was after, thanks mate.
I'll also be doing a mod to the expansion tank - will be putting in a float switch thats linked to a warning light and buzzer to indicate coolant low level in the tank.

I'll be putting the warning light and buzzer next to the gauges in a "mudpod"

I want two as the factory fitted indicator isn't very accurate and the sender is very high in the engine and with coolant loss could not indicate a very high temp condition - which usually writes off the head!

I don't know how to achieve it (in term of what sensor to use), but I suggest "something" to detect when the thermostat housing begins to fill with air or vapor, as it is often the indicator for both coolant level diminishing and coolant temp rising ...

Yep did think of that mate, but i saw a float switch on ebay that will operate a warning light and a buzzer on my mudpod. I have already bought a water temp gauge to go in the pod so i see it as "belts and braces" approach to try and avoid a "cooked" head.

But a sender fitted in the top hose will only indicate engine temp once the stat opens, if the stat fails it will read cold and the engine will be boiling it's bollocks off.
Might be a good idea to use both ;)

Here are the ebay parts for the coolant level alarm with buzzer:
float:160647268477
buzzer:160537428008
switch:250848314390
warning lamp:110722504143

Easy to wire up and the switch is used to isolate the buzzer when it alarms but still allows the warning light to indicate.

Just looked at that link mate - haven't seen it before but its similar to what i'm going to do! :) Hadn't thought about the delay relay to stop false alarms - very good idea!!!

This forum is brilliant for info and so far its saved me a fortune being able to spanner my own disco!!! :)

the working temp range seems a bit short, but I'll have a look at industrial units monday when in the office, I remember seeing something much thinner, a cylinder about 10-12 mm in diameter
