I have been reading possibly wrongly that changing the auto oil all in one go can cause problems. I was thinking of sucking it all out with my air fluid extractor.
Should I?
I must admit I generally hate changing auto oil but this one's rigmarole takes the biscuit.

I know u can't get all of it out, we normally do 3 x oil changes, with mileage Inbetween

hippo done an excellent write up and is on this forum , if u do a quick search

must make sure it's done between 35-45 c with the engine running , really important

mostly use the ATF carlube

I've currently used the millars ATF which so far so good

make sure u remove the correct drain plug and not the one for the reverse band

have u done an auto box oil change yet

get urself a probe type thermostat , so u can get a good and accurate measurement within the filler plug

if u can't find hippos write up please let us know and one of us will write the full instructions for u

John. The easiest way to do a fluid change is. Measure the quality of fluid removed. Refill with the exact same quantity;)
If you auto has been changed in the last 70K miles, the fluid should be ok;)

does that allow for when u trip over a step and pour all the fluid out over the new block driveway

oh plse don't ask how I know , lol , took me forever to get all the oil off,

Windows , front door and plants were included :D:D

Not quite in your league! But that's like the time before last doing an oil change - trying not to get a single drip on the drive - like I do every time and never succeed. I had drained all the oil and accomplished said feat and was well chuffed with myself. Then took the filter off, which I dropped into the collection bowl and it splashed everywhere :)

oh, ur poor man , sounds like the thing I would do , lol

my wife was around then and just had the drive done for a few days and looked really nice

it took rather a lot of courage to say , erm, erm them bricks look abit of a funny colour , wonder if they mixed them up

she replied you've dropped oil haven't u , erm no dear honest I haven't , the oil decided to do a Newton , as I tried to stop it one way it went the other way

said it from a distance as well , just out of reach from a bloody big clump

I did think I was going to be on the sofa along with dinner in the dog , for life :D

With my Paj and a few others the amount of engine oil that comes out is horrendous so like you I would inevitably end up with some tragic spillage somewhere, usually when pouring the old oil into the recently emptied container. I surprises me how I can get 6 litres into a 4.5 litre container BUT I digress; I bought this not long ago

after years of using all sorts from washing up bowls to cut out containers and it is a godsend.:) No more spillage or walking on eggshells.

I did do a search for FL auto oil change and got a zillion results but didn't see a hippo one. I've done auto changes before and loathe doing it. This looks like a nightmare and should be well left alone.

Yes thanks John............I intended to do it your way, a few short interval dumps with it...........just wondered if I could use the lazy way. This machine has been serviced every year apparently and oil and filter changes done every time..............I thing the last owner did it to bribe the garage into getting it through the MoT.
Just looking for the filler plug has had me groaning.

Only remove the oil level plug with the engine running,
Automatic fluid level check.

The fluid level must be checked with the fluid at a temperature of 35 to 45 degrees C. Measure the temperature of the fluid using a thermometer through the oil filler aperture on the top of the transmission.

With the fluid at the appropriate temperature, position the vehicle over an inspection pit, on vehicle ramps, or jack it up, but make sure it is level. Release the retaining screws and remove the transmission undertray.

Start the engine and move the selector level from P through all the gear positions for 2 to 3 seconds, then return it to the P position.

With the engine still running, remove all traces of dirt from around the level plug. Unscrew the plug and allow any excess fluid to drain off. Discard the drain washer, a new one must be fitted.

If no fluid spills out, pull of the filler plug from the top of the transmission, and add fluid until it just begins to spill from the level hole.

Move the selector from P through each gear position and back to P. Allow any excess fluid to spill from the level hole.

Wipe the level plug with a clean rag fit the new washer. Clean the area around the level plug opening the refit the plug, complete with the washer, tightening to the specified torque. [14Nm] Refit the engine/transmission undertray, and where necessary, lower the vehicle to the ground. Refit the filler plug.

Great thanks. Why a search doesn't bring this up from the get go beats me.
I have to say it is all very daunting.
I am used to 'empty and refill' and using a good old dipstick to check it with.

agree would be good as a sticky

amazing how many garages don't know how to do oil changes on the jatco gearboxes , hearing stories of them being over or under filled

peace of mind doing it urself

I even bought a couple of the jatco service manuals , take my hat off to the designers , such a complicated design

They get overfilled because people don't check out the information correctly. A common mistake is to drain out the 4.5 litres that come out. Look at the book that shows a capacity of 9 litres, then put that back in. Obviously it is then 4.5 litres overfilled.
A few mL either way isn't going to damage the box. 4.5 litres to much, isn't going to be good for it.
So for ease at home. Drain out the box and measure the quantity removed. Put back the same quantity removed. Unless 9 litres comes out!! The fluid change capacity is ~4.5 litres.

It's the way to go.;)
tried looking for the filler plug today.................unsuccessfully.
Tried checking if it is an allen drain bolt............unsuccessfully.
Arghhhhhhhh.

blame it on the weather , lol

have another go at the weekend

i put mine up on ramps first in order to find them , then took it off so I could level the car out

found a small spirit level that I laid across the gearbox

hope the pics were of some use to u , filler plug is normally hidden behind some cables at the front right hand side , right next to the round gearbox connectors

as said make sure u don't remove the wrong plug

I did it the easy way my local auto box garage did it for £40 all in as the under protector was off.
.also when we do oil changes I say we because my son in law does it while I watch with bad back and legs . I have a big piece of ply wood about 4feetx 4 feet under the car and any spill is usually on that but you can just get a couple of cardboard boxes and flatten them out .

u sound like me with back issues ,lol

put a big sheet down , then an old carpet over the top

my son keeps asking me to buy him a car creeper , don't want to make him too comfortable

my son also does the bits on the landy for me that I can't manage , is so annoying when ur brain is fine but ur body says I don't think so :D
