:) Hi everyone

Don't shoot me just yet - I am new to site and may be posting in wrong place or asking the daftest question ever

We have a 1995 p38 which already had an aftermarket radio in when we got her but still has the Clarion 6 disc changer in the boot.
In our paperwork we found a card which had the original head unit model number on PU-9836A. Now I have found a hed unit with model PU-9837A on and was wondering if this would work with the excisting cd stack in the boot
I am wondering if the head units were the main bit of kit so to speak & the cd was compatible throughout the p38 ?
Any ideas ???

Thanks :bump2:

Thank you, yes it was mainly to use the cd stack unit & the aftermarket one that is fitted has very poor radio recption.
Sorry for posting it incorrectly - I am young but I will learn !!! :)

I'm all for originality but why would you want to fit an original head unit? They're pretty rubbish by today's standards.

I recently fitted one of these in mine: Blaupunkt Amsterdam
Unless you have the ears of Spock the frequency response of your lugoles will be exactly the same as the lugoles of yesteryear and thus unable to tell the difference between an old HiFi/radio and a new one. If you think otherwise you are dreaming:rolleyes:

Actually, the sound has noticeably improved!

The 9837 has a built in amp but will control the autochanger. The standard 9836 uses separate amps in each door and of course will also control the autochanger. Both units can have aux in fitted for mp3/ phone input/ dab.

Thanks Davie B :)
Will get hubby to get it all sorted then - thanks everyone :clap2:
Hopefully I will be able to help someone one day !!

And you can differentiate between the sound and all the background noise to know that Mr Spock? It's in the same league as the placebo effect in medicine, you want to believe it's true so in your mind it is true.:rolleyes:

Nope, it's most definitely better. But I guess a modern high end head unit is going to be better than something designed 20 years ago back in the 90s.

Actually the quality of things like amplifiers has gone downhill, high end Hifi had superb quality handpicked components and the power amplifiers were meaty affairs - now everything is built down to a price with rubbish Chinese components - the facilities are vastly better but component quality has gone backwards and cheap powered subwoofers can make a system sound good to an untrained (more accurately clueless) ear, most people these days wouldn't know good sound if it smacked 'em in the face, they listen to music compressed into MP3 or AAC though a "HiFi" designed to accentuate bass and treble - stuff detail or the accuracy of the sound stage. As for things getting better the system in my 99-2000 Rangie isn't even vaguely as good as the (OE upgrade) Harmon Kardon system I had in an old straight 6 XJR back in 1995. The stereos in my two subsequent V8 XJRs weren't as good either - louder and bassier but sound quality was poor - they couldn't handle loud transients - sign of a weak output stage and underspecced capacitors. But then nothing in a car can be called HiFi the fact it's in a car will always compromise sound.

The output stages in my HiFi power amps at home weigh about 5Kg each with enough copper to keep a pikey happy for a month - but then each one is worth more than my Range Rover so I'd expect them to be good quality. British HiFi is still the best in the world.

Totally agree when it comes to home stereos. Modern stuff, unless you spend a fortune, isn't as good. However I do think car stereos have come a long way. Just compare a standard stereo out of a 90s Escort to it's modern equivalant Focus, etc.

Yes the bottom of the range cheapy stuff is better - I agree - but I don't think the high-end stuff is, amplifier and speaker quality if very iffy in general and as I said a powered subwoofer can make a crap system appear to be half decent - and most midrange onwards cars have those these days.

Well got stereo - unfortunately it has no plug on back of it to plug cd player into and no volume :-(
Guy did give us half our pennies back tho :)

The car has 2 aerial wires which are not in use (aftermarket in use we have found out ) why 2 and what do these 2 need to go through to go into the back of a radio head unit ?? is there a missing piece of a jigsaw here ?
