Cold diesel engine vs warm - difference in sound

My defender 300tdi throbs when cold and is only constant on idle once warm, but it consistently pulls well be it either cold or warm

My disco 300tdi however is constant on idle, but it does sound a little more warn, however it works harder to get up to speed when cold,

take your myth and ............ New diesels have a automatic fast ideal in cold weather starts, to over come low oil pressure, and some even had a hand throttle to do a fasts idle, 1000rpm ;)

A myth,it comes from the state of Indiana's own website, you thick ****. so why did you say in your post to let the engine idle for so many minutes then.dumbass.

That's some bed time reading - thank you.

It doesn't quieten down until at proper working temp, and although my vag derv is louder when first started it quietens quickly.

Tom

Interesting as my vag diesel is properly loud and rough for about 10zeco DS after starting.

Mine is an ARL pd150 with 184k on the clock, but it quiet compared to my two previous pd dervs that had significantly less miles on their clocks.

Does the 200 sound 'knocky' or is it just a general higher level of noise?

Thanks
Tom

Mines only got 77k on it so not been to the moon and back like most. There's a bit more Diesel knock when cold and it vibrates a bit more. All normal though.

Yours might have had its cam replaced, the PD units are prone to severe cam wear.

My 200 is on 101k. I started it last night and moved it out of the garage to sort the bad connectors out on the main beam stalk (all done ok :) ) and it sounded fine at cold idle. No different to and old-ish diesel from cold. It really is only under load, and it is pronounced knocking.

I'll get a video as promised and hopefully the sound will be clear enough on my mobby...

I'm very familiar with the cam issue, and when renewing a leaky cam cover on the current Anni I had a good look at the cam, and it hasn't go the revised black followers under it, so I'm not sure it has been done. They're a funny thing though, and can/have gone (on a friends) as early as 16k with full vw history....

Cheers all

I don't get any pronounced knocking on mine. Just a bit louder when cold.

I had bad cam wear on a New Beetle tdi pd I had at 72k.

I was told the 2.0 doozils arent as good as the 1.9's

That's the 2.0TDI PD's that came out 07 until 11. They had oil pump issues.

The latest common rail engines are totally different. 16v heads, common rail technology, very quiet. My 2012 is on 30k now and it's been brilliant so far. Far fewer issues than any of the PD's I had.

And they are very economical (Ignore the fact I have no diesel, I was just pulling into the petrol station).
