Hi guys,

New to the group, also new to TD5 ownership after 10 years of messing around with Volkswagens (i know).

I picked up a 2004 D2 TD5 automatic, 170k and previously owned by F1, so has been up and down Europe trailering cars and team members etc. Good service history.

At idle, cold and warm there is a very dull, low, intermittent quiet knock that matches RPM and disappears when driving or revving. You can feel it in the gearstick or when leaning on the air filter looking in the engine bay. Only makes itself known when you come to a stop. It comes and goes, comes on for 10 seconds ish goes away for 10 if that makes sense, which is what makes me lean towards it being a non typical old diesel noise. Can hear it mostly from inside the cabin and by the passenger wheel well.

Just changed oil and filters just incase, but no change. Again its a quiet knock and could just be a typical td5 noise but worth asking the experts first!

Have watched all the videos online of various knocks but all way "lighter" and tappy then mine. Other then that it runs fine, is remapped, doesnt smoke or overheat and is hugely reliable. I did read a thread somewhere saying some remaps can cause this? Was remapped at 80k btw. So over 110k miles ago.

Many thanks 😃

Update, noise is coming out of the intake, much louder with airbox open. So i took it down to the closest Land rover specialist who spent the day checking valves and compression, all fine and believes its a sticking EGR. Anyone had this before? Blanking it tomorrow and will update if noise is gone

EGR, sorry no idea my EGR valve has spent the last decade in the garage.

As above my first thought was pulley, but have injectors been checked?

Could be an injector, spring issue, or excessive clearance.

No need to blank it just to test it, simply unplug the electrical plug to it. Tell us which model 10p, 15p, or 16p engine it is and we'll tell you which plug(s) to unplug to make this happen.
Or you could disconnect the vacuum pipe(s) and plug it/them.

This is a bit rough and ready but ought to work enough to test it.
