Cold diesel engine vs warm - difference in sound

I always thought leaving an engine on idle caused more wear. Was told it glazes the cylinder bores after a while

Can do, but better with modern engines and oil. I have seen tractors left idling for hours with no noticeable effects, in any case a good blast ploughing or muckspreading should deglaze! :D

I never have much to do with modern diesels, but with an old indirect injection engine I would leave it maybe a minute, or a bit more on a cold day, before pulling away. Firstly to let the combustion chambers warm up, and secondly to ensure oil was fully circulated.

I was always told, and also have read in an owners manual to not leave the engine on tickover on startup as it does more damage to the engine as it's cold. Better to drive carefully with little load on the engine and no high revs for the first few miles.
Mine normally sits on tickover for long enough for the seatbelt to go on

Maybe the case with modern engines, but many older ones produced almost no power until warm, atomisation just wasn't good until the chambers were hot.

Did your manual suggest how to drive with light load at first when you have to go up a very steep slope straightaway, or towing 3500kg, or both?

Most modern diesels are electronically restricted when the engine is cold, possibly to reduce emissions. Always better to warm up the engine if it's a turbo and also to let it idle to cool down after a run.

My 13 plate golf diesel is fantastic on fuel economy on my 89 mile round trip commute I can hit over 70mpg. It's the 1.6TDi blue motion. Also pulls well for a 1.6, mixes it up okay with the Audi boys in the right lane if needed.

Engine had been fine in mine. However my 7 spd DSG auto gearbox went at 25k......

Quality German engineering:rolleyes:

biodiesel calms all diesels down due to its slower/longer burn cycle-my td5 sounds like a bag of nails if run on derv-almost quiet as a petrol on bio-even better when warm

I recorded a cold and warm run for comparison but unfortunately the sound quality wasn't good enough to hear a clear difference, so I deleted them.

My new (s/h) CD player turned up for her in the post today so come the next journey I can hopefully have some tunes to distract me! Been too long with no radio...

Cheers
Tom

My 2008 Mazda 6 2.0d (Ford engine) sounds truly terrible when cold and judders if you put your foot down.

It is fine once it warms up though.
