The toon!
I've had a squeaky clutch for about last 3 month and after reading symptoms I convinced myself it's not serious however it's now gone and turned into a clunk.any ideas?05 td4.rough costs of repair?hope it's not serious as I can do without a big repair bill at this time of year.thanks

Depends on what you mean by a clunk. When you push the clutch, or when taking up drive? Have you had any work done on the clutch recently?

It's when I press it.had the garage when it was in for mot to put bit lube on it to get rid of squeak but think it was just some sort of spray it did lessen the squeak a bit but no actual work done on it.just been back out and no squeak for 1st time in about 3 month and no clunk either but it does seem harder to get into second gear.

Hmmm, does it do it when stationary with engine running? Possibly a gear shift linkage drying out, although it does sound clutch related :( it's a hydraulic release system with an external slave cylinder. Does the bite point feel like it's changed at all?
Sorry, for all the questions, but I work for LuK technical dept and deal with clutch problems daily, and it's the only way to diagnose things

No mate keep the questions coming I appreciate any advice so least I have idea before garage tell me whole new clutch.ive just dug out Haynes and it suggests it could be dry pivot point joint.yes it does it when stationary with engine running but I've not actually sat and pressed and depressed it just pulling away from junction and driving, just wanted to get back ASAP once this clunk replaced the squeak.did take it for quick spin once back and the clunk nor the 3 month squeak was present but I need to use it for work the morra just hoping it doesn't snap etc.the bite point feels the same and it pulls ok and the clunk is definitely from the clutch pedal itself.thanks

Could just be a collapsed pedal shaft bearing, or the master cylinder connection breaking up.
Get under the dash with a torch and have a look at the pedal shaft, grab the clutch pedal and give it a good wiggle. Also look where it's bolted too (the actual pedal bracket) as it could be a fracture or broken weld.
From what you say it's unlikely to be the actual clutch.
Oh, does it sound like it's coming from inside the car or outside?

Been the garage and been advised the clutch is to heavy for master cylinder I think it was so whole new clutch master cylinder and dual mass fly wheel will be the option.apparently when I press the clutch some component is trying to jump out then it's popping back in and this is whats causing the clunk.this part is on the clutch pedal.the mechanic has used a Cable tie to stop this component popping out as I don't have the cash for the repair 700:eek:.the clunk has now gone.does this make sense to anyone?thinking about it could I not just renew the part that's been tied instead of the whole lot with a massive repair bill?

My advice - get a second opinion. Best bet is to just have the master and slave cylinders replaced, with new fluid, I can't see why the clutch would need changing if a cable tie has solved it.
Sounds like the plastic has just aged and is going brittle.
It's essential to have both repaced with new fluid though, as any old fluid could potentially cause a leak through contamination (common cause).
Don't be put off by a britpart master and slave as they buy them off LuK anyway.

My linkage from the master cylinder to the clutch peddle used to move to one side and then clunk when it moved back......fitted a circlip and plastic washer to keep it in place about three years ago.
When it moved to the side it would be harder to change gear as the master cylinder was at a slight angle and when you pressed the clutch pedal you wouldn't get the full throw on it.

I'm gona get second opinion Quattro as I was thinking it must be possible to renew faulty part rather than whole lot.ive just looked in service record which says it had new 3 part clutch fitted at 94k well it's only on 109k now!so surely can't be wrecked already.gona have a look to see if I can fit the circlip aswell as if I can do this would be fantastic to last 3 year.thanks for the replies lads, appreciated.

Definately no need to replace the clutch then. If there are no other clutch related symptoms then leave well alone.
