i have a 1993 200tdi discovery andwhen i take up the slack when pulling away there is a clunk coming from the front.. (diff area) it wil be fine after that untill i slow down or go back down through the gears the it will clunk when pulling away again... has anyone got any ideas of what it could be? i dont have a clue

i would think it would be the uj's as it seems like there is alot of slack to take up (not sure if that makes any difference at all) i just dident think the clunk would be that loud i will check it though cheers

Hiya Jake, are you sure it's coming from the front? As it sounds like a classic symptom of wear in the 'A' frame balljoint at the back above the rear axle.

Cheers
Dave

Mine clunks all the time ( 200 tdi defender ) uj's are sound. I put it down to a lot of wear in either the diffs or gearbox or transfer box, when I can afford it I'll get round to replacing, but for the time being it's a 16 year old car and I can live with it.

i no the feeling its just loud and anoying there is a small bit of play in one of the uj's but that surely cant make a clunk that loud can it?
i hope it isent my diff cuz that sounds expensive :(

That's why I said when I can afford it.

For the time being it wouldn't hurt to replace the uj, these things are normally a process of elimination.

my front diff has almost 1/4 of a turn play in it. which makes the front end clatter a bit if your a bit harsh with the accelerator. i'm waiting for it to pop soon. Thats what you get with 300bhp running through it! the rear is strengthened.
10 spline diffs are fairly cheap, from £20 - £40. and plentiful.
i will be upgrading however!

If you have ANY play in a UJ you should replace it. They're cheap and will get worse quickly (see recent thread where the propshaft FELL OFF). In my xperience, which is admittedly not that great, UJs don't clunk. They make a sort of metallic ping. Clunk is more likely to be diff. And don't forget to grease those UJs when you service it. You may have to screw in a grease nipple specially to do the job (and take it off again and replace the plug afterwards).
