Both the original engine and the used 90k 2.5 one in there now have never been very clean inside. Whenever I do an oil change the oil is black imediately after. With the cam cover off it’s pretty crappy in there. I’ve increased oil services on the old girl but it’s obviously had a ****ty life. Any recomendations to help clean it out short of pulling the engine?

Diesels always turn their oil black almost immediately. Nothing to worry about if it's running well.
Worth cleaning any sludge out of the cam cover and I believe there is a mesh filter in there as well that needs cleaning.

Back in the 1970's I used a flushing oil after draining the sump and before refilling with oil. But that was on petrol engines with mineral oil, might not be appropriate in these days of modern synthetics. An occasional sump removal and a good de-sludging was also the order of the day. Maybe cleaning the sump and cam cover out and doing a couple of short interval oil changes might clean up the guts of the engine.

Just out of interest, I checked our kia sportage oil after reading your post and it's done 50 miles since it's oil change last week and it's black. That's a motor with only 6k on the clock so I don't think it's anything to worry about.

You can run an engine flush (such as wynns) through just before you change the oil, but i would do the filter at the same time just incase it dislodges any deposits.

get a higher detergent oil, oil going black isnt an issue if its changed regular and has no sludge build up

I’m sure it isn’t mate but I would like to see engine a little cleaner inside as it does look pretty shi*y with the top cover off. My old 156JTD had 220,000 on the clock and was a lot cleaner inside.

Always do mate. Never drop the oil without a filter change. Thought about wynns but have heard horror storries with running mains and ends after use although not on a 2.5 admittedly.

Higher detergent oil? Do you have any examples? Can’t tell you whats in the sump as it’s not been off.

you can look in the rocker box

I did think of pulling the sump but they are a bit of an arse on these I believe.

In the summer I took the sump off, the rocker off, the turbo pipes and drain and the intercooler and cleaned the lot. New oil and filter and still black afterwards. It is the particulates from burning. Only way to get clean oil is to run with LPG.
