Can this be done by removing then soaking the pair of washable conical air filters in petrol to get out the dirt then spraying with a light coating of 2-stroke oil?

"petrol can cause a rash..."

thanks for the pointer - good to learn from the experiences of others

this worked fine, thanks for the useful advice & encouragement. the spray bottle I used for the 2-stroke oil clogged up so I just dripped the oil on the filters instead. so far nothing has exploded and the engine power has improved so must have done something right.

the filters were so dirty that I thought they were black until I cleaned them and found out they were green - just goes to show how green I am :D

the reason I am using these filters is because i was told that they enable better air flow and as a result give 1 to 2 more kilometers to the liter of petrol than the original filter.

however where I am located is very dusty and am a bit concerned that in this case using these conical filters may be counter-productive since they probably get clogged up with dust quicker than the original air filter and need more maintenance. I was told they had to be cleaned about once every 4000 km but maybe this is not often enough.

perhaps I should look into using a snorkel but am not sure how this would effect fuel consumption that is a big concern as my v8 petrol engine is quite a drinker already consuming on average about 1 liter per 5km so avoiding even higher fuel consumption is a priority. Anybody tried a safari snorkel on a RR classic V8?

maybe the best solution is just to get used to cleaning the conical filters more often than I had thought I would need to do?

You are supposed to wash them in warm soapy water. Allow to dry, then oil them. In dusty conditions they clog up a lot quicker than a normal filter would because the **** sticks to them.

You say filters - I'm guessing you have two so running on carbs?

I run my 3.9 efi with a K&N in the original filter box and fed through a home made snorkel - no difference in MPG but a snorkel would help to reduce dust getting in as long as it is facing backwards (mine does only because it would look stupid the other way around!) it might also be argued that a snorkel improves engine performance as the air is a tiny bit cooler but I can't say it's noticeable.
