Hi and thanks for reading this newbie post.

I am now the seriously proud owner of a brand new Defender 110 SW but I am worried:

After driving a fair stretch on the motorway (e.g. 30 miles), when I pull off and idle at traffic lights there is an obvious "clattering" noise ("bag-of-spanners") from underneath when changing gear/using the clutch. If I stop for a while it goes away.

Should I worry or is it just something Land Rover build in to remind me I'm British and should have stayed in Suffolk? It reminds me of my Dad's old Landy - but that might not be a good thing...

Cheers for any words of wisdom,
Matt ("Defending" in Germany)

Thanks - it'll be a bit tricky to convince the dealer as it's not easily reproducible.

Incidentally, I've already been to the dealer twice because the tracking and steering wheel were out of line after they fitted new springs. They are NOT helpful (or reliable apparently).

Could it be the exhaust hitting something whilst cooling down? As I said, it only happens a short time when changing gear on "hot idle" and (until now) when it's raining (doing that a lot in Munich at the moment).

Cheers,
Matt

Matt! Do you mean "new to you" or actually "I've won the lottery" new?!

If you have a smartphone, use the record function, most of the mic's are pretty effective close up, you'll be able to demonstrate the noise and they can't really dodge that.
cheers

Thanks for all the advice:
@Kennymac: Lottery "new" - I have wanted my own Landy all my life )))
After getting your replies I actually bothered to run the truck and crawl underneath to see if I could spot any problems and... TADA... the exhaust was badly aligned so it hit the rear driveshaft with my daughter in the back (no, she's not that fat - presumably the exhaust distorts a bit with the heat). The problem was made worse by the lowered springs (car parks are usually 2 metres here in Germany). Re-aligned the exhaust and angle-groung the mount - all better )))
Thanks again for the confidence,
Matt

Okay - "delivery van" - believe it or not Defenders have to be insured as "commercial vehicles" - "delivery vans" here in Germany - double the insurance :(

Thats a bus. ze germans have some strange views on vehicles and what you can do to them,do you have many issues with customising cos i know they don't like people improving on original spec with bikes are they the same with cars.

Customising is hell:
1) Pay extra for part, e.g. foot pedal cover (!) because it comes with official certificate from "TÜV" (they check everything here).
2) Fit part and go to local TÜV office so they can check it on the vehicle (pay again)
3) IF TÜV say it's okay - and sometimes they don't (they disagree with themselves?) you take their certificate... and
4) Go to the local licensing authority who charge more money to get the change (foot pedal covers - remember?) written into the official vehicle papers.
Hell, I tell you - just try fitting different tyres!
Still, there are no speed limits on motorways and they are WIDE :) :) :)
