Last throw of the dice. A nice person is sending me a new pick-up for the dizzy.

Did you put a meter across the pick up to check if the resistance was within tolerance? Also, is the air gap correctly set. Did I read you said you have a spark? If so, it is unlikely the problem is the pick-up or the amplifier unless the spark is intermittent. Are the rotor arm and cap genuine Lucas?

In most cases when an ignition amp is on its way, you get a mis-fire normally when hot. If you have been messing about with things as we all sometimes do and now it won't start try advancing the ignition timing. I know it sounds silly but I have had the very same thing happen more than once and I have found advancing the ignition timing has seen the engine start and then once run the timing re-set to where it was and no further problem - strange but true.

Anyway, hope that helps, maybe..ish

Sigh...
Nadda.

So I did the tests again in the electrical section and I get the following:
Bat - to + on coil = 0
BAt - to - on coil = 12.2v
7.6mv on amp ground
3500ohms on the dizzy pickup
Bat + to coil + ignition off = 12.8 volts ( should be 0)
Ignition on = 15mv !?!?! and same at crank.

Can any dudes decipher this?

Next, I wnet thorough all the tests again and this time the oily fails are the yellow and white wire, which goes to the injectors. I traced the wires and it seems fine.

I see nothing that would stop me getting a spark.

Hmmf. I have to get this going or it's going to the scrappers as there be building work starting so I'm battling along.

I ran a cable again from the battery to the +ve on the coil and all I get is a weird sound, no cranking.

Right, the new resistor I put in the loom is reading 7965 ohms. It should be 6.8k or so, and only 2v across it, but it came with the car as a spare

Anyone know the new part number? How do I make my own?

Ignition amplifier ground indicates a problem. Should be 0. Ignition amps are cheap, swap it out, make sure you put MS4 on the back before you attach it to the dizzy. If you are careful, you can swap out the amp without taking the dizzy out but not easy.

Pickup resistance looks O.K. did you check the reluctor air gap??

Voltage readings don't seem to make much sense, without actually being able to prod and poke about not easy to make a suggestion, that said, I did once have a mystery ignition problem and opened the loom to trace the wires between the coil and the ignition amp. There is a splice in the loom can't remember which wire if it was the white one or the white with black trace but yours may have different wires if it is a later one or its been messed with. Anyway, have a careful check and look for corrosion or broken wires. Also check the connectors at the coil, they corrode and break.

HTH

Thanks, I've done most of that and put in a new resistor with no result. The only thing I can do is swap out another ignition amp. I ordered up a top brand one and I'll see. I'm so used to popping a dizzy in and out I can do it blindfolded and usually first time :).

I'll check the air gap on the reluctor again when my iggy amp arrives.

What is the air gap measurement please? I do not have any 80gsm paper, but I do have plastic feelers.

Okay, she fires up and runs, but is very tappety as she's been standing for a while. Should I do anything? Additives or something? I'll bung in some fresh petrol too.

It appears to be a mixture of things and the many combinations of parts and mucking around has sorted it for now.

The new iggy amp was a top bollox one from a UK made company and was heavier and meatier than the others. It was this, plus bad cables, possibly summit with the dizzy and an iffy resistor. It took so long as I don't have many people to swap stuff out with, but the usual rule of Landy ignition is get the best parts.
I weighed the rotors on the kitchen scales and chose the heaviest one. Same with the cap and amp.

I learned much about the wiring and ECU and much about ****ed up LPG installs by back street garages.

Thanks for the help guys and for putting up with weird questions.

Plus, I may have figured out another way to see if an amp is bad....stand by.

Let it run up to temp, change oils and check valve clearances. Might go gingerly with the brakes for a while, because the fluid will absorb water and degrade and the rubbers may decide to give in.

That all sounds good to me! Tappety sound should disappear quickly if not something not good in top end or low oil pressure meaning followers not pumping up or followers stuck.

Always use top quality ignition parts - I've been banging that drum for must be almost 10 years. Pattern parts might get you out of a jam but in the long run they will cause a break down.

Anyway, glad it's running.
